Operations Manager

 

The Orion Rail team are looking for a Rolling Stock Operations Manager to work with a highly reputable, industry leading business.  

Join our client as a key leader in site operations, where you'll play a vital role in upholding and promoting their commitment to safe working practices. As the Operations Manager you will ensure that the Operations team is fully aligned with their vision, values, and customer expectations, while consistently following site procedures.

Your leadership will be crucial in delivering operational excellence, maintaining the highest standards of safety for all employees, protecting customer assets, and ensuring the quality of service remains uncompromised. Additionally, you'll oversee the adherence to all storage and maintenance contractual obligations, ensuring compliance with the project governance processes.

 

 

Key Responsibilities as the Operations Manager:

Responsible for all site operations at Location, including special events, ensuring full compliance with all health, safety and environmental regulations and the supporting site policies and procedures.

Conduct weekly and monthly safety tours and instil the discipline within the operations team.

Work alongside the Health and Safety Business Partner to ensure safe operations and compliance on site.

Ensure operations teams daily standard work is carried out accurately and effectively.

Provide operational support to Location tenants, on-site customers and Company staff when required.

Lead process improvement activities.

Accountable for all the activities carried out on site and the safe working practices within the Asset Management Facility (AMF), ensuring that all works are done in line with the agreed Method Statements and in line with all HSE obligations.

Lead and develop the AMF Daily planning meeting.

Lead and develop the Daily & Weekly operational planning meetings.

Lead by example and coach the team members.

Ensure absolute compliance to the company’s competency management procedure.

Ensure the operations team are kept up to date with the site rule book and operating procedures.

To conduct risk assessments as required, ensuring that any issues are managed, and appropriate mitigations are in place.

To ensure that all maintenance equipment, service, inspection, and calibration are up to date.

Working with the General Manager to support the annual business planning process ensuring that the site maximises the revenue potential and that costs are managed in line with the budget.

To ensure that all operational activities are recorded to enable effective and complete invoicing for services delivered.

Work closely with the Site Project Manager to ensure that the customer requirements and expectations are achieved.

To manage all vehicle moves and that these are done in the safest and most effective way to minimise disruption and maximise utilisation of the site.

To ensure the welfare of all operational staff ensuring they have high quality facilities, proper regulated rest periods and that they have the equipment and clothing to allow them to fulfil their role in such a way that their personal health and wellbeing is maintained.

To ensure all staff are fully competent to discharge their duties.

Ensure all project obligations are carried out in conjunction with the contract and company's project governance process.

 

Personal Profile for the Operations Manager:

Orion Rail are looking for an Operations Manager that has come from a rail operations background or a heavy engineering environment and has significant operational management experience with strong working knowledge of lean principles.

 

Qualifications for the Operations Manager:

  • HNC/HND in an Engineering or an Operational Management discipline.
  • ILM L4 / L5 or management equivalent
  • Project Management qualifications advantageous.
  • Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma Training
  • iOSH Managing Safely
  • Competent in basic rolling stock maintenance and capacity planning.
  • Must have driving licence for motor vehicles

Experience: 

  • Strong team management skills.
  • Good at building morale in teams
  • Good working knowledge performance management, absence, disciplinaries, Training & development.
  • Strong Health and Safety knowledge within heavy industry.
  • Project Management experience is essential.
  • Working knowledge of financials at an operational level.
  • Excellent working knowledge of the railway depot operations.
  • Excellent knowledge of safe systems of work for railway depot / yard operations.
  • Working knowledge of passenger and freight rolling stock systems.
  • Good general understanding of rail traction and safety systems.

Key Skills:

  • Excellent leadership skills, with the ability to create operational plans and deliver high quality results through their team.
  • Good communicator at all levels
  • Fluent in word, excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in motivating and coaching operations teams
  • Good problem solver.
