The Burford Recruitment Company is delighted to be working on behalf of a prestigious private estate, seeking an Estate Gardener to assist the Head Gardener in leading the team. This role focuses on estate groundskeeping in addition to gardening duties, ensuring that the estate's grounds are consistently maintained to the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborating with the Head Gardener to oversee the development and maintenance of the estate, including the manicured gardens, kitchen gardens, and surrounding grounds including meadows, and woodlands.
  • Leading a team to ensure efficient and professional execution of physical labour tasks such as tree felling, meadow management, woodland maintenance, wisteria pruning, fence sorting/fixing, lawn mowing etc.
  • Line management responsibilities, including staff scheduling and shift coordination.
  • Working closely with the Family and Head Gardener on project planning and execution, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Managing and coordinating contractors to maintain aesthetic standards across the estate.

General Gardening Duties:

  • Undertaking traditional gardening tasks such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, pruning, and plant maintenance.
  • Managing soil preparation, pest control, and greenhouse/nursery plant care.
  • Maintaining paths, garden structures, and water features.
  • Ensuring proper use and maintenance of garden machinery and tools.

Skills & Attributes:

  • Relevant horticultural qualifications (RHS Level 2 or equivalent) are desirable.
  • Extensive professional experience in large private estate management and horticulture.
  • Strong knowledge of garden design, hard landscaping, and machinery operation.
  • Due to the nature of the role, you will need to be physically fit.
  • Attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and ability to work under pressure.
  • Passion for horticulture and a proactive, positive approach.
