GSL Education’s Newcastle branch is looking for a dedicated and passionate SEN Teaching Assistant (ASD Specialist) to support students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in a dynamic school setting in Sunderland. As an ASD Specialist, you will play a critical role in ensuring the academic and social development of students by providing tailored support, adapting learning strategies, and working closely with the SEN team to create an inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities for SEN Teaching Assistant (ASD Specialist):

  • Provide tailored support to students with ASD across various age groups, both 1:1 and in small groups.
  • Assist the class teacher with implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behaviour management strategies.
  • Take an active role in developing learning materials and adapting lesson plans to suit the needs of ASD learners.
  • Monitor and report on students’ progress, working closely with SENCOs and external specialists to support student development.
  • Manage challenging behaviours effectively, ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment.
  • Collaborate with school staff, parents, and external professionals to ensure continuity of care and education for ASD students.
  • Provide additional support during unstructured times, such as lunch and breaks, to promote social engagement and interaction.

Requirements for SEN Teaching Assistant (ASD Specialist):

  • Experience working with children or young people with ASD in an educational or care setting.
  • Knowledge of PECS, Makaton, or other communication aids is advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of autism and the ability to implement strategies that support learning and behaviour.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Patience, empathy, and resilience when working with learners who may have complex needs.
  • A relevant qualification in SEN support or a related field is desirable.
