Area Manager - Development Management (Somerset)

We’re looking for an experienced planning professional to lead two of Somerset’s Area Planning Committees. This is a key management role responsible for driving high-quality development and performance across two dedicated teams of planners.

As an Area Manager, you will:

  • Manage and support teams of planners, from apprentices to principal officers

  • Oversee all stages of planning applications, from pre-application to implementation

  • Act as the lead professional at Area Planning Committees

  • Deliver service improvements and exceed national and local performance targets

  • Represent the Council in public inquiries and hearings

  • Deputise for senior managers and liaise with internal and external stakeholders

You’ll need a strong understanding of planning legislation, proven leadership skills, and the confidence to manage complex cases and provide clear, professional advice.
