GSL Education are looking for an experienced and compassionate SEMH Primary Teaching Assistant (TA) to join a welcoming primary school in High Peak, Derbyshire. Role Overview:

The SEMH Primary Teaching Assistant (TA) will work alongside the class teacher and the SENCO to support children with a range of social, emotional and mental health challenges. Your role will primarily focus on helping students who face difficulties related to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), trauma and other behavioural challenges. Your support will enable these children to thrive academically, socially and emotionally in a nurturing and structured learning environment.

SEMH Primary Teaching Assistant (TA) Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual and group support to children with SEMH needs, ensuring they can engage with the curriculum and make progress in their learning.
  • Assist in implementing personalised learning strategies and behaviour management techniques for students with ASD, ADHD, trauma and mental health challenges.
  • Support children with social and emotional regulation, helping them develop positive coping strategies and resilience.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive classroom environment where students feel safe, respected and motivated to learn.
  • Collaborate with teachers, SENCO and other professionals to monitor student progress, behaviour and well-being.
  • Support children during difficult moments, offering guidance and emotional support where needed.
  • Help develop, review and implement individual education plans (IEPs) and behaviour support plans (BSPs).
  • Assist with classroom management and maintain an organised, structured environment to support students’ academic and emotional needs.

SEMH Primary Teaching Assistant (TA) Requirements:

  • Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant (TA), particularly supporting children with SEMH, ASD, ADHD, trauma, or behavioural challenges.
  • Must be a driver and able to obtain business insurance, as the role may involve travel between settings.
  • Strong understanding of the challenges faced by children with SEMH needs, learning disabilities and mental health issues.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with children, staff and parents.
  • A calm, patient and empathetic approach, with the ability to remain composed in emotionally challenging situations.
  • A relevant qualification (Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent) or other recognised qualifications in SEN or child development.
  • Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
