HRGO Recruitment are seeking a Litigation Fee Earner for our client in their landlord and tenant department.

The department prepares and advises on landlord and tenant litigation matters. Typically, this is standard and accelerated possession matters, but can extend to defended proceedings, together with advice on relevant landlord and tenant legislation.

Clients range from private landlords with a single property to large managing agents and insurance companies.

Key responsibilities

You will working for a busy landlord and tenant department together with 3 litigation fee earners (overseen by a solicitor) and 4 case handlers, you will be responsible for assisting with the day to day running of the department's caseload including contentious and defended matters. This will include the following tasks (this is not an exhaustive list):

  • To undertake fee-earning work with supervision and provide contribution and support to the work of the landlord and tenant department
  • To gain enough technical experience to deal with defended and complex cases, particularly, matters that have been allocated to the fast track and/or multi-track
  • Deal with appropriate drafting and comply with court directions and orders
  • Must work towards quickly being capable of working independently on smaller matters and providing effective support on larger matters.
  • Correspond with clients and other parties (Defendant/court/other solicitors/managing agents) as directed
  • Liaise with clients regarding the current status of cases
  • Issue possession claims on possession claims online system
  • Complete paper applications for the court including manual possession applications, accelerated applications and warrant applications
  • Produce instructions to advocates and counsel
  • Produce notices seeking possessions
  • Update case management information spreadsheets
Your skills

Due to their increasing workload and client base, it is important that the candidate has paralegal/fee earning experience ideally within civil litigation (preferably in dispute resolution or landlord and tenant matters).

Our client are looking for a motivated individual who is enthusiastic about a career within the law and will fully benefit from this opportunity. As the candidate will be joining a busy team, they will need to be enthusiastic, work well under pressure and be a good team player. In general, the following skills are required.

  • Good knowledge of landlord and tenant law. However, their in-house training can effectively train Landlord and Tenant knowledge for any candidate without specific knowledge of L&T
  • Good knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules and litigation procedures
  • Good IT skills
  • Organised and able to work on their own initiative
  • Confident in a small team environment
  • Confident to speak with clients and third parties over the phone
  • Ability to work under pressure, and prioritise where necessary
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality at all levels
  • Willingness to be creative and adapt as this is a new enterprise
