We are working with a leading Main Contractor delivering a long-term MOD framework in Reading, offering a secure pipeline of work for a minimum of 3 years, with potential for further extension. The project comprises a combination of new build and refurbishment schemes, forming part of a wider defence infrastructure programme. The new build elements will include a variety of structures such as office buildings, training facilities, storage units, and ancillary buildings, constructed using a mix of steel frame and reinforced concrete (RC) frame construction methods. Refurbishment works will involve upgrades to existing MOD facilities, including internal reconfigurations, M&E enhancements, and fabric repairs within live operational environments.

Security Clearance Required

Due to the nature of the work, applicants must be eligible to undergo security vetting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading the design process from pre-construction through to project delivery
  • Coordinating internal and external design consultants, architects, and specialist subcontractors
  • Ensuring design outputs meet project specifications, programme milestones, and technical requirements
  • Managing design approvals and facilitating design reviews with client and stakeholder teams
  • Identifying and mitigating design risks early in the process
  • Supporting value engineering and buildability reviews in collaboration with delivery teams
  • Ensuring full compliance with MOD standards, regulations, and security requirements

Requirements:

  • Previous experience as a Design Manager on major construction projects, preferably within MOD or government frameworks
  • Strong technical understanding of both new build (steel/RC frame) and refurbishment works
  • Ability to manage multiple design packages and interface with various disciplines
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Proficiency in relevant design and document management software
  • Eligibility for security clearance is essential
