Interim Environmental Service Director

We are seeking an Environmental Service Director to support, develop, promote, and maintain constructive multi-agency working. This role is crucial for ensuring the Council can deliver its priorities, overall aims, and objectives by providing high-quality services that focus on the needs of local people. The successful candidate will have specific responsibility for managing the ongoing contractual relationship with the Council’s waste management PFI partner.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Manage the contractual relationship with the Council’s waste management PFI partner to ensure compliance with all aspects of the Waste PFI contract.
  • Meet national and local targets for waste minimisation and recycling, ensuring full compliance with all associated legislation.
  • Serve as a Nominated Responsible Officer on the Council’s Transport Services Operator Licence.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Council to deliver services that bring sustainable improvements to the environment.
  • Identify and leverage opportunities for effective partnership working to enhance service delivery.
  • Engage successfully with Elected Members, partners, and key stakeholders including residents, communities, and other business sectors to achieve organisational objectives.
  • Represent the organisation corporately within various partnerships.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Extensive knowledge of waste collection, recycling, and disposal at a scale similar to that of the Wakefield District.
  • Strong understanding of how to deliver operational services with the lowest environmental impact.
  • Proficient in contract and relationship management, including negotiating skills.
  • Detailed understanding of business needs on a national, regional, and local level, particularly in Wakefield.
  • Thorough knowledge of partnership working to enable positive outcomes.
  • Excellent understanding of good governance principles.
  • Proven track record of successful leadership in environmental legislation and services, specifically waste management.
  • Experience managing diverse professional teams in complex environments to achieve high performance targets and corporate objectives.
  • Commitment to personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the role.
  • Knowledge of compliance with Operator Licence requirements.
