The Client

Our client one of the leading Approved Inspectors offer building control service which are tailored to client requirements. Our client can provide solutions when you want them, where you want them, from design phase to completion.

The Role

Our client are now seeking an experienced Technical Director with both technical & leadership expertise in Building Control, Safety and Compliance to join their team.

The role will involve you contributing significantly to the profitable long-term growth of the business and advocate the values / culture of the business. The successful candidate will be a key member of the Executive Management Team (“the EMT”) and oversee and drive the strategic direction of the business from a technical perspective, providing technical leadership guidance and support on all technical services (including building control) across our national network of experts.

To develop the necessary technical guidance and support operations in service delivery processes and measurement of technical risk. To raise technical standards across the group. To ensure the business maintains the necessary regulatory (BSR) registrations (corporate and Individual) and is compliant with all technical and regulatory requirements, keeping up to date with all regulatory updates and changes reflecting these in guidance systems and processes.

You will be accountable and proficient in identifying key opportunities and technical risks, to recommend, develop, implement, and support the implementation of robust training and technical processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set the strategic direction of the business from a technical standpoint, ensuring alignment with goals and objectives.
  • Work across the group with leadership and delivery teams, providing technical expertise in all technical services building control regulations, safety and compliance.
  • Lead the group technical forum and be the final decision maker on technical issues, identifying solutions and strategies to support technical personnel and protect the wider business. Provide subject matter expertise to help with the resolution of technical referrals and complaints.
  • Define and maintain technical operational standards for service delivery, ensuring efficiency and quality in inspections.
  • Collaborate with business development and technical teams, developing and implementing technical sales strategies to drive business growth across a number of services.
  • Provide advice and support in technical discussions with key stakeholders and clients.
  • Offer input on risk and compliance considerations to ensure services meet regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Assist the Head of Training & Development in the development of technical training courses, qualifications, apprenticeships and assessment (including competency assessment and registration of Registered Building Inspectors) internally and to the wider market.
  • Responsible for creating & leading a dedicated technical working group and reporting outcomes to the leadership, operational teams, and external stakeholders.
  • Responsible for upholding the clients Quality (ISO9001) Risk management and compliance polices, compliance with all regulatory requirements, Operational Standards Rules, and Code of Conduct.
  • Ensure robust quality and service assurance procedures are maintained and embedded to track and demonstrate Building Regulation compliance and continuously assess competency across the business.
  • Track and advise of future changes in legislation and develop strategies to mitigate risk to ensure that our restricted RBCA/RBI activities and functions remain up to date. Oversee group approach to ensure restricted activities and functions are undertaken in a technically competent manner to satisfy the RBI Code of Conduct and BSR Operational Standard Rules.
  • Be a key representative for the group at external stakeholder groups and identified technical and professional bodies.
  • Attend EMT team meetings to provide regular updates, report findings and present solutions in respect of any key technical and regulatory matters to be actioned on behalf of the Group.
  • An advocate for the group representing the business in a professional manner.

Experience and Qualifications Required

  • Proven experience as a Building Control specialist in a technical leadership role and a proven track record as a leading professional ensuring compliance with the Building Regulations plus (but not limited to):
  • Professional qualification/membership RICS & MCABE or equivalent.
  • Hold and maintain Specialist Technical Class 3 Registered Building Inspector and Class 4 Technical Manager registration status.
  • Comprehensive breadth of experience of different types of client services, buildings and projects. Comprehensive knowledge and experience of working on a variety of complex, higher risk and non-standard building types and construction methods.
  • Development and implementation of business and project plans.
  • Demonstrative experience assessing safety and risk.
  • Strong knowledge of (and conversant with) relevant UK building regulations compliance and technical guidance.
  • Full understanding and application of Professional Conduct Rules for Registered Building Control Approvers, Operational Standards Rules and the Code of Conduct for Registered Building Inspectors.
  • Knowledge of Fire Safety and Health and Safety.
  • Detailed knowledge of the construction design process and RIBA Stages of work.
  • Policy and framework development.
  • Assessing compliance against regulation & legislations.
