Senior Estimator position to join a growing main contractor operating across London and the home counties with head offices based in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire.

Position Details

A Senior Estimator with general contracting experience is required to join and lead the estimating and pre-construction team based in Hertfordshire.
The Estimating job function is to be performed in relation toa range of projects, both frameworks, and one-off projects:

  • Commercial
  • New Build & Refurbishment
  • Residential
  • High Street Regeneration

  • Community Centres and Spaces
  • Conservation and Heritage
  • Externals and Redecoration

Responsibilities:

  • Meet tender return deadlines.
  • Conduct thorough cost analysis, ensuring accuracy and complete tenders.
  • Secure profitable projects for the businesss short and long-term workload requirements.
  • Allocation of estimating team labour to each tender opportunity and management throughout the submission process.
  • Ensure that all tender submissions are comprehensively reviewed and qualified correctly prior to submission.
  • Identify and assess potential risks and opportunities in tenders and propose effective mitigation strategies wherever possible.
  • Provide tender status reports to the Director(s) on bids and projects.
  • Provide objective assessment of the tenders that are available to tender and provide reasoning.
  • Supporting and guiding/training less experienced members of the estimating team.
  • Lead weekly team meetings and prepare tender reports.
  • Regular review of the company's estimating documentation and rates, ensuring these are up to date.
  • Collation of various estimating data to assist future evolution of tender processes, identifying areas of weakness and strength.
  • Periodically check rates within the estimating software and set new rates as required.
  • Undertaking site visits as required.

Skills and Experience

  • Ability to build up estimates from first principles based on the unique scope of the project and tender information.
  • Able to take off quantities.
  • Read drawings and understand rates for key elements.
  • Understand buildability and implications for estimating and pricing projects.
  • Able to evaluate project programme requirements and to recommend and develop methods of construction and suitable techniques to enable cost efficient bidding.
  • Demonstrate good technical knowledge of various construction methods and their impact on the estimating, pricing, costing and construction buildability and sequencing process.
  • Able to use previous project experience to work up estimates based on knowledge rather than simply schedule of rates method.
  • Able to demonstrate a detailed knowledge of general contracting.
  • Good understanding of sub-contract packages
  • Ideally experienced in the use of estimating software at an analytical level rather than just able to perform data entry and extraction.
  • Good working knowledge of construction methodology and outputs.
  • Good understanding of all forms of construction contracts, JCT, NEC, D&B, etc.
  • Previous experience of general contracting including, new build, fit out, internal and external refurbishment, cut and carve, and all methods of construction.

Qualifications/IT Skills Requirements

  • Preferably a degree or HNC in Quantity Surveying or similar.
  • Proficient in all Microsoft packages, excel, word, outlook etc.
  • Ideally can use MS Project for tender programming.
  • Ideally has experience of a estimating software package.
  • Ideally has experience of take-off software.
