Project Engineer

We are seeking Project Engineers, Package Managers, and Project Managers with experience in water and/or infrastructure project delivery to support the delivery of projects within the Core Projects stream. The role will report to the Area Project Manager.

Individual project values will typically range between 500k - 3M. The individual will be responsible for the delivery of either a single large site or multiple smaller-scale projects, with a focus on site safety, quality, program management, and commercial/subcontractor oversight.

The Project Engineer will develop key relationships with UU operational personnel, supply chain partners, and promote a team environment, leading the projects under their control.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide full oversight and accountability for the successful completion of maintenance projects through design, procurement, assembly, commissioning, and handover.
  • Ensure the supply chain remains compliant with the framework management plan, HASEMP, and all site-specific agreed documents.
  • Implement and ensure compliance with safe systems of work in line with SHE procedures.
  • Lead site collaborative planning and take ownership of the project look-ahead program.
  • Manage change control, liaising with the commercial team and Project Manager for subcontract management and change resolution.
  • Provide leadership to promote a safety culture, aiming for zero LTI and RIDDOR incidents.
  • Ensure a commercial focus with high scrutiny of project scope, identifying efficient delivery strategies, eliminating waste, and ensuring value-for-money solutions.
  • Engage all stakeholders and ensure their support for projects and services, managing potential impacts.
  • Ensure all projects comply with UU governance processes and obtain necessary approvals.
  • Ensure reliable project performance reporting, and provide monthly exception reports to the Project Manager.
  • Identify key project risks early and implement mitigations, escalating issues or blockers to the Project Manager as necessary.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the site team, driving a positive SHEQ culture and promoting improvement initiatives.
  • Identify delivery resource requirements and liaise with the Project Manager on resource needs in a timely manner.
  • Report project performance on SHEQ, time, and cost metrics monthly for portfolio reviews.
  • Strive to identify and deliver efficiencies.
  • Resolve blockers/issues and escalate those outside of your control or influence.
  • Ensure 100% SHEQ compliance with framework plans and project requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, clients, and teams to foster positive relationships.
  • Ensure efficient project handover upon completion.
  • Manage both internal and external stakeholders, including customers affected by the project.
  • Ensure statutory approvals are obtained.
  • Contribute to monthly forecasting of cost and program for all projects.

Candidate Specification:

  • Skills, knowledge, and experience in CDM and construction management as Principal Contractor.
  • Advanced understanding of customer impact and how to minimize disruption, ensuring their needs are addressed in every scheme.
  • Strong project management skills with a solid understanding of water and wastewater treatment.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • Excellent contract awareness and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and adjust tasks as needed.
  • Good understanding of site delivery and buildability.
  • Proven track record of delivering projects.
  • Strong commercial, financial, and analytical skills.
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to respond to unexpected events and develop creative solutions.
  • Proven experience managing various contractual arrangements, including competitive tendering, partnering, and frameworks.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Previous experience in a water industry project delivery role.
  • HNC/HND or degree in a relevant engineering discipline (preferred, but other relevant qualifications will be considered).
  • CITB SMSTS qualification.
  • EUSR Water Hygiene certification.
  • Confined Space Working (preferred).

Note: This role requires candidates to be part of an out-of-hours on-call rota for a 7-day period, typically once every 20 weeks.
