Role Overview:

Our client is looking for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to support the financial and commercial management of infrastructure projects, including highways and water systems. The ideal candidate will work closely with senior quantity surveyors, assisting in various aspects of cost management, procurement, and contract administration. This position offers an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career professional to gain valuable experience and grow within a leading company in the infrastructure sector.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Procurement Support: Help in the procurement of materials and subcontractors, including the preparation and evaluation of tender documents.
  • Contract Administration: Support the administration of contracts, including tracking changes, managing variations, and ensuring compliance with contractual terms.
  • Financial Reporting: Assist in the preparation of regular financial reports, including cost forecasts, cash flow projections, and value engineering assessments.
  • Payment Processing: Help process payments to subcontractors and suppliers, ensuring timely and accurate financial transactions.
  • Site Visits: Participate in site visits to assess work progress and gather data for cost and value analysis.
  • Document Management: Maintain organised records of all financial and contractual documents, ensuring easy access and retrieval.
  • Risk Management: Assist in identifying and evaluating project risks, contributing to the development of mitigation strategies.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other team members to ensure seamless project delivery and cost control.
  • Learning and Development: Proactively engage in learning opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of quantity surveying and the infrastructure sector.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Educational Background: A degree or diploma in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Early Career Experience: Some experience in a quantity surveying or cost management role, ideally within the construction or infrastructure sectors.
  • Numerical Proficiency: Strong numerical skills and attention to detail, with a keen interest in financial management and analysis.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and effectively.
  • Organisational Abilities: Strong organisational and time-management skills, capable of handling multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Technical Competence: Basic understanding of construction methods, contract law, and cost management principles.
  • Software Skills: Familiarity with quantity surveying and project management software such as MS Excel, and any other relevant industry tools.
  • Professional Memberships: Working towards or interested in obtaining professional memberships such as RICS or CIOB.

Desirable Skills:

  • Practical Experience: Prior experience in an infrastructure project environment, particularly in highways or water systems.
  • Advanced Software Knowledge: Proficiency in industry-specific software such as CostX or CATO.
  • Knowledge of Contracts: Basic knowledge of NEC or JCT contracts.
  • Career Aspirations: Ambition to grow within the company and progress to senior quantity surveying roles.
