Job Title: Process & Tooling Engineer

Location: Sunderland
Salary: £43,000 - £46,000 per annum
Shift Pattern: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Half-day on Fridays)

Main Purpose and Scope of the Job
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Process & Tooling Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role will provide engineering support and solutions to ensure process quality and capability are consistently maintained. You will lead process development to achieve cost reductions in a competitive manufacturing environment and take responsibility for process and tooling design & development, including new and aftermarket product integration.

Position in the Organisation

  • Reports to: Lead Engineer & Maintenance and Engineering Manager
  • Budget Responsibilities: Collaborate with the departmental manager to achieve monthly and annual budget goals.

Duties and Key Responsibilities

  • Support the engineering team in the introduction of new products and tooling, from the quotation process to full production.
  • Collaborate with project teams to ensure timely and budget-conscious delivery of projects.
  • Control design changes from external/internal customers and manage their implementation.
  • Develop and implement processing standards across metals and plastic products such as Injection, Bend & Press, Co-Extrusion, and Assembly.
  • Create and maintain process documentation, including process charts, standard operating procedures, and line trial setting documentation.
  • Take responsibility for processing area layout and facility arrangement.
  • Apply Lean principles to process design and operation, ensuring continuous improvement.
  • Develop effective Poke Yoke processes to eliminate defects in production.
  • Review and improve material controls, focusing on cost reduction strategies.
  • Ensure safe working practices across the process teams, including contractor management.
  • Participate in the investigation, analysis, and rectification of customer concerns, contributing to 8D investigations.
  • Be a key participant in IATF and customer audits, ensuring completion of corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with other operational departments (e.g., Production, Maintenance, Toolroom) to support Kaizen initiatives.

Person Specification

Skills and Abilities:

  • In-depth understanding of process improvements and tooling, jig, and process design.
  • A comprehensive range of problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to understand engineering and technical information.
  • Strong knowledge of customer expectations and deliverables, with an awareness of the cost of poor quality and failure.

Experience:

  • Previous experience in the automotive sector is required.

Knowledge:

  • HNC/HND in an Engineering discipline (or equivalent).
  • A practical, hands-on approach to problem-solving.

Personal Attributes and Other Requirements:

  • Flexibility to work different hours when necessary.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage with all levels of staff.
  • Self-motivated, with a strong work ethic and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
