Caretaker

We are seeking a dedicated Caretaker to maintain a safe, clean, and functional environment at our primary school in Brent. This role is crucial in ensuring that both students and staff have a comfortable and well-maintained space to work and learn in. The Caretaker will perform a variety of general maintenance tasks, manage cleaning duties, and ensure the security of the school premises.

Day-to-day of the role:

Building Maintenance:

  • Perform routine inspections to identify any repair or maintenance needs.
  • Carry out basic repairs and report any major issues to the Facilities Manager or external contractors.
  • Ensure that heating, ventilation, and lighting systems are functioning properly.

Cleaning and Hygiene:

  • Oversee the cleanliness of the school, performing routine cleaning tasks and assisting the cleaning staff when necessary.
  • Ensure that all school facilities, including classrooms, toilets, and kitchens, are clean and sanitary.
  • Manage waste disposal and recycling, ensuring rubbish is collected regularly.

Security:

  • Close the school building as required, including setting alarm systems.
  • Maintain security during school hours to prevent unauthorised access.

Liaison and Communication:

  • Communicate with staff, parents, and external contractors to coordinate maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance or safety requests from school staff.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Basic knowledge of building maintenance.
  • Good understanding of health and safety procedures.
  • Ability to operate basic maintenance tools and machinery.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
  • Good communication skills, with attention to detail and high standards of cleanliness.
  • Physical fitness for manual work (lifting, moving equipment, etc.).
  • Willingness to undertake further training as required.
  • Previous experience in a similar role is desirable but not essential.
  • Ability to pass a background check (required for working with children).
