The Role

The role will be predominantly machine based although the individual will assist the shift manager to improve and manage all aspects of their shifts performance to include health and safety, quality, productivity and personnel performance. Be a member of the line management team and provide production information to that forum as well as playing a key role in the setting and achieving of overall business objectives. Also control financial cost on their respective shift to include realising cost take out opportunities.

Set clear objectives for shift members and support them towards their individual and collective targets. Maintain excellent factory relationships and ensure that the targets are met and costs controlled.  Provide a product of an acceptable quality standard as determined by customer and market demands, supported by the layered audit process. Ensure robust procedures are in place and adhered to and enforce the company Heath and Safety and other Policy in the factory environment.

Become a role model to other employees in terms of personnel practices and ethics.

Main Duties

  • Provide cover for the shift manager position.
  • Ensure adherence to the company health & safety procedures ensure zero tolerance to unsafe practices is enforced.
  • Enforce company standards and discipline.
  • Providing a robust and controlled production facility in line with business objectives and targets
  • Responsible for efficient and effective performance of the production shift.
  • Set and carryout an on-going training plan for their shift to meet the needs of the business.
  • Personally handle complex issues raised.  Advise following managers accordingly.
  • Play a key role in the development of a pro-active, profit, results focused environment.
  • Advise operations management on production requirements and capital investments for budgetary submissions.
  • Manage selected projects towards a successful conclusion, this may include cross functional working.
  • Ensure production and technical knowledge of the shift is of the highest standard and maintained.
  • Support customer and supplier visits when required.
  • Provide an operationally excellent manufacturing function within the business.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards of the highest level.
  • Ensure excellent factory relations and efficient supplier relationships.
  • Manage selected suppliers to ensure best technical and quality performance.
  • Control waste to within the company budgeted figure, ensuring year on year improvement targets are met.
  • Bring together and manage multi-functional teams to ensure objectives are fulfilled.
  • Facilitate communication and share best practice with other sites and Group functions.
  • Contribute ideas/vision to enhance the efficiency of the business.
  • Ensure that daily, weekly, monthly and annual targets are achieved for their shift.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in a manufacturing/Production/Technical role, corrugated environment ideal but not essential.
  • Is a multifaceted leader and demonstrates a number of management styles.
  • Can be “tough-minded” when required and carries sufficient credibility and gravitas when dealing with business.
  • Demonstrates empathy and patience when appropriate.
  • Can bridge the gap between customer demands and plant capabilities.
  • Has key understanding of manufacturing needs in relation to efficiencies, quality and budgets.
  • Needs to be an effective communicator.
  • Must have first class interpersonal / human skills.
  • Must have good analytical skills.
  • Must be entrepreneurially minded with a sense of urgency.
  • Must be a decision maker and innovative.
  • Must be an effective “self starter”.
  • Must be able to demonstrate that they understand the needs of a competitive demanding market and respond accordingly.
  • Must provide effective, strategic business feedback / develop business relationships.
  • Must have the ability to develop and deliver a vision and strategy.
  • Must be able to understand drive towards change.
