We are seeking an experienced Management Accountant with a background in project accounting and cost accounting to join our clients team. The finance department is made up of 3, and our client is a commercial SME business based in Weybridge, Surrey.

The ideal candidate will play a key role in financial reporting, cost analysis, and budgeting while ensuring that project financials are closely monitored. This role will involve providing support to senior management in decision-making by delivering accurate financial insights and reports related to project performance, costs, and profitability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monthly or Quarterly Reports: Preparing financial reports on a regular basis (monthly, quarterly, or annually).
  • Profit and Loss Statements (P&L): Providing a detailed summary of the company’s income, costs, and expenses during a specific period.
  • Balance Sheets: Compiling reports that reflect the company’s financial position, including assets, liabilities, and equity.
  • Cash Flow Statements: Summarizing the inflows and outflows of cash to ensure liquidity and solvency.
  • Variance Analysis: Comparing actual results to budgeted or forecasted results to identify any discrepancies and explain the reasons for them.
  • Prepare and monitor project budgets, ensuring that costs are controlled and that projects are completed within budget and on time.
  • Track and analyse project costs, including labour, materials, overheads, and other expenses, ensuring proper allocation and reporting.
  • Oversee the preparation of monthly and quarterly financial reports for active projects, including profit and loss statements and cost forecasts.
  • Provide financial advice and recommendations to project managers on the financial performance and risk management of projects.
  • Ensure accurate allocation of expenses to the correct project codes and departments in alignment with company accounting policies.
  • Prepare and review project financial statements, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and company policies.
  • Conduct cost analysis to determine cost-effective processes and improvements across various departments or projects.
  • Provide detailed cost reports, analysis, and forecasts to senior management for informed decision-making.
  • Monitor and control the allocation of indirect and direct costs to projects, products, and departments.
  • Review inventory management and work with the procurement team to ensure cost efficiency in sourcing and purchasing.
  • Perform variance analysis, investigating any discrepancies between actual and budgeted costs, and report findings.
  • Establish and track cost structures, ensuring that cost allocation methods are in accordance with internal and external standards.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual budgets, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and project needs.
  • Coordinate with different departments to compile financial data and prepare comprehensive budget reports.
  • Provide monthly financial summaries of actual vs. budgeted performance, identifying cost overruns and areas of improvement.
  • Support internal audits by ensuring that project accounting and cost accounting practices are compliant with financial regulations.
  • Consult with project managers, department heads, and senior management to ensure accurate reporting and alignment on financial matters.
  • Provide training and support to project managers and other stakeholders on financial processes and budget adherence.
  • Collaborate closely with external auditors and tax consultants during audits and ensure project-related accounting documentation is accurate and complete.
  • Identify areas of inefficiency in cost reporting, project accounting, and financial processes, and recommend improvements.
  • Support the implementation of new tools or software for better tracking and management of project and cost accounting functions.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in management accounting, with a focus on project accounting and cost accounting.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, including project cost management, job costing, and variance analysis.
  • Ideally with XERO accounting software and EXCEL
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to present financial data to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under tight deadlines.
