The Role:

So, what will you be doing as a Sonar Engineering Manager?

  • Lead a multi-disciplinary engineering team, ensuring that all HMS solutions meet requirements and are fit for purpose.
  • Manage engineering activities across the entire HMS portfolio, overseeing all technical aspects from concept through to delivery.
  • Partner with product and program managers to achieve high standards of engineering delivery on complex, high-value projects.
  • Develop engineering plans that clearly identify dependencies, assumptions, risks, and opportunities.
  • Build and review work packages, establishing delivery strategies and work breakdown structures (WBS).
  • Oversee the design process through key project gates, guiding projects from bid through to production readiness as part of a defined Lifecycle Management (LCM) process.
  • Influence program decisions to balance cost efficiency with full compliance to requirements.
  • Regularly present program status, updates, and recommendations to senior leadership, including the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and CEO.

What are we looking for in our next Sonar Engineering Manager?

  • Proven experience as an Engineering Manager or Engineering Lead in complex engineering delivery, ideally in maritime, sonar, or acoustics.
  • Demonstrated ability in product-based engineering and managing large, multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Skilled in engineering estimation, with a capacity to review, challenge, and defend estimates.
  • Strong experience in producing detailed engineering plans, with a focus on managing dependencies and identifying risks.
  • Solid understanding of the engineering project lifecycle, with experience navigating projects through key design gates from bid to production.
  • Strong leadership presence, with experience engaging and presenting to senior management and stakeholders.
  • Coaching and mentoring experience, supporting team development and growth.
