We are recruiting a Lead Vehicle Interior Trim Design Engineer for one of our automotive clients based in Cranfield. You will be working for a globally recognised automotive company. This is a long-term contract role. The contract is on an ongoing basis a may run for several years.

Key Responsibilities of the Interior Trim Design Engineer:

Lead Interior Design Engineer Role requiring an understanding of design for customer, design for manufacture and idea generation with a distinct focus on cost competitiveness, functional leadership, data analysis and reporting.

• Achieve cost target (piece price / VT, cost reduction)
• Achieve quality target (NEVQS, warranty)
• Achieve project KPI’s (Key performance indicators)
• Technical solutions for development / market concern
• On time design note release / delivery

Concept
Creating concept sheets and supporting presentation to CVE.
Providing technical explanation of changing content to cost estimators to set the budget.
Generating design estimations for cost of change from benchmark.

Development
Preparing Styling Feedback of A-Surface feasibility and technical requirement.
Full parts development and management taking into responsibility for cost, timing and delivery to meet all required specifications.
Knowledge of all regulatory requirements for each region.
Capability and experience to develop the most efficient and cost-effective solution.
Ability to manage, influence and co-ordinate with other departments and suppliers.

New model Sourcing
Creating RFQ (Request for Quotation)
Reviewing supplier concepts for Cost and Quality
Quote and breakdown analysis.
Validating supplier quotes meet the RFQ and Concept needs.
Identifying challenge points and queries in the quote to close the gap between quote, concept and budget. (Purchase lead commercial negotiation)
Creating and presenting status to Management.
Direct engagement with supplier technical and commercial.

New model cost management
Repeating quote & breakdown analysis at major milestones in the Project digital and physical phase, generating technical queries and challenges.
Analysing design change and validation technical liability.
Generating cost reduction ideas to secure product technical and commercial competitiveness.
Benchmarking against internal and competitor references.
Lifecycle cost management
Generating technical cost reduction ideas.
Benchmarking at part and vehicle feature level.
Management of supplier activity, and internal reporting.
Development of cost reduction design changes with supplier.
Whilst the dominant focus is Technical Cost the Engineer will be expected to contribute to New Model and Lifecycle Design Engineering development when required and must display an understanding of injection moulded plastic and pressed metal assemblies.

• Work within a cross functional global team

Qualifications & Experience for the Interior Trim Design Engineer:

• Design / engineering qualification
• Previous automotive design and development experience
• Previous experience of cost breakdown analysis and working in a technical/commercial cross functional team.
• Prior knowledge of interior cabin parts / modules
• Prior knowledge of manufacturing processes
• Valid driving licence and able to travel globally.
• CAD interrogation skills
• Time management skills
• Microsoft office (Excel and PowerPoint in particular)

Hours & Pay for the Interior Trim Design Engineer:

• Monday to Friday
• 39 hours per week
• £27.00p/h
