We have a fantastic opportunity six Home to School Passenger Assistant Council, this is a part-time Temporary role for the next 2 months, with the possibility of extension.

What is the role?

Wigan Council are looking for a six Home to School Passenger Assistants, a contracted taxi will collect you from home before picking up the children on your route. You could be working on a one-to-one basis with a child / young person or working with several children/young people who are transported to school on minibuses/coaches.? As part of this statutory service, you will be responsible for the safety, well-being, and comfort of the children/young people during transit, ensuring all passengers arrive at their school/college ready to learn and enjoy their education.

What are your responsibilities?

  • The role encompasses a split shift: Taking children to school in the morning - collecting children from school in the afternoon.
  • Assist passengers on and off the vehicle at the start and end of their journey, as required.
  • Ensure that all passengers are safely received into the educational establishment they are attending and safely arrive at their home destination at the end of the day.
  • Work with and engage with the passengers with a range of disabilities and complex needs.
  • Deal with challenging behaviours and promote a calm and relaxed environment for all passengers.
  • Update management with successful intervention techniques which can be captured electronically and used as best practice throughout the PA cohort.
  • Complete detailed, accurate and timely incident reports as required.
  • Ensure the safety, comfort and well-being of passengers for the duration of their journey.
  • Build effective relationships with passengers and their families, carers and schools to ensure an outstanding, reliable service

What skills do you Need?

  • Must have recent experience of working as a Passenger Assistant or Family Support Worker/Care Assistant
  • Must be physically fit and healthy, as you will have to assist service users in and off the taxi or bus.
  • Excellent people skills, as you will be speaking to the public, other members of staff and managers.
  • A valid Enhanced DBS on the update service, will be required for this role.
  • If you Live in Wigan, they may be able to arrange pick up from your home and bring you back dependent on school routes.
  • Working hours 15 – 20 hours a week, between the hours of 7.30am – 16.30pm
  • If you live outside Wigan Borough, you will need to meet your contracted taxi at a prearranged pick-up point.
  • Staff are not required in the school holidays as the role is term time only
