With an annual turnover of approximately 1,000,000, a dedicated team of 45 staff and a range of impactful services, including information and advice, support at home services (home help and handyperson), and combatting loneliness and social isolation, we are a trusted voice for people in the community.

Each year, we help local people claim millions in benefits they are entitled to, provide essential support services and tackle loneliness and isolation. As we navigate a changing funding landscape and increasing demand, we need an inspiring leader who can drive innovation, secure sustainable income streams and champion our mission.



The Role

As Chief Executive Officer, you will set the strategic direction for the charity, ensuring financial sustainability while enhancing and expanding our services. Working closely with the Board of Trustees, staff, volunteers and stakeholders, you will lead on income generation, digital engagement and partnerships to secure a thriving future for Age UK Wigan Borough.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership - Develop and implement a future-focused strategy that reflects the needs of older people and maximises our impact.
  • Financial & Commercial Oversight - Ensure the financial sustainability of the charity through sound financial planning, fundraising and diversification of income streams.
  • Fundraising & Income Generation - Identify and secure new funding opportunities, including grants, tender opportunities and social enterprise initiatives.
  • Digital & External Communications - Drive digital transformation, ensuring our online presence, social media and digital services reach and engage a wider audience.
  • Stakeholder Engagement - Build strong partnerships with funders, statutory bodies, voluntary organisations and local businesses to enhance collaboration and funding opportunities.
  • Operational Excellence - Lead and inspire a high-performing team, fostering an organisational culture of innovation, accountability and excellence.
  • Advocacy & Representation - Act as the public face of Age UK Wigan Borough, representing the charity locally and regionally to advocate for people's rights and needs.


About You

We are seeking a dynamic, forward-thinking leader who is passionate about improving the lives of people over 50. You don't need to have worked within Age UK before, but you must have the expertise to drive growth and sustainability.



Person Specification:

  • Proven experience in a senior leadership role, ideally within the voluntary, social care or health sector.
  • Strong financial management and commercial acumen, with experience in income generation and securing funding.
  • Track record of developing and implementing successful fundraising strategies.
  • A strategic thinker with experience in organisational growth, business planning, and risk management.
  • Digital transformation and communications expertise, including social media, digital fundraising and stakeholder engagement.
  • Excellent people management skills, with the ability to inspire, influence and negotiate with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • A deep understanding of the challenges faced by older people and a commitment to addressing them.
  • A collaborative, hands-on, and resilient approach to leadership.
