Purpose
- Responsible for the management of Health & Safety systems.
- Provide comprehensive support to the site management team by ensuring effective management systems are in place that meet legal and company requirements.
Day-to-Day Duties
Health & Safety
- Ensure compliance with company Health & Safety policies and procedures.
- Comply with the company’s ‘Life Saving Rules’.
- Promote and enforce the correct use of PPE.
- Take responsibility for personal safety and that of others on site.
- Report any accidents or near misses immediately.
Food Safety & Hygiene
- Ensure compliance with Food Safety, GMP, and Hygiene policies.
- Maintain a clean work environment, following the 'clean as you go' policy.
- Adhere to all site Food Safety and hygiene procedures.
Quality
- Follow site Quality procedures at all times.
- Maintain compliance with the Quality/ISO document control system.
Main Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with all aspects of the company H&S Policy and associated procedures.
- Develop, implement, and monitor Health & Safety policies.
- Support environmental plans and the Environment Manager.
- Promote Health & Safety awareness and ensure all related functions are completed.
- Ensure risk assessments and SSOW Lotto RAMS contractor control measures are in place and regularly reviewed.
- Drive improvements in H&S key performance indicators.
- Act as the Legionella responsible person.
- Initiate action plans following incidents, accidents, or legislative changes.
- Investigate accidents and near misses.
- Lead the site’s H&S Committee and safety observation program.
- Prepare and chair monthly Health & Safety meetings.
- Provide clear and relevant H&S advice, guidance, and training.
- Identify opportunities to enhance Group H&S processes.
- Support employee engagement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with statutory requirements in collaboration with HR and training teams.
- Develop effective communication channels for HSE matters, including training and toolbox talks.
- Work with Group HS&E and engineering teams to ensure compliance with regulations for capital projects.
- Assist with project implementation, including investments and new installations.
- Provide analysis and reporting for annual budgeting.
- Ensure departmental spend aligns with budget.
- Manage site safety and security, including CCTV and access control.
- Conduct regular Health & Safety audits (CATS).
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, including the HSE and Environment Agency.
- Oversee fire control systems, ammonia safety, and First Aid provision.
- Participate in site 'food defence' and crisis management teams.
- Monitor insurance inspections and ensure ongoing compliance.
- Conduct risk assessments for return to work, pregnancy, and DSE, liaising with HR and Occupational Health as required.
- Ensure statutory dust and noise level exposure monitoring.
- Act as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies for health and safety incidents.
- Contribute to the Group H&S Committee and participate in cross-audit processes, requiring UK and international travel.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in a Health & Safety role within an FMCG manufacturing environment (preferably food manufacturing).
- National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (NEBOSH) minimum, with preference for National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals.
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Self-motivated, proactive, and results-driven.
- Strong leadership and engagement skills.
- Ability to drive cultural change.
- Comfortable working in a matrix structure within an international business.
- Analytical skills to interpret data, produce statistics, and identify trends.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a Lean approach.
Desirable Skills & Training
- Experience working with multiple stakeholders in an international organisation.
- Additional safety certifications or training related to food manufacturing safety.
- Experience implementing continuous improvement initiatives.
- Strong IT skills for data analysis and reporting.
