Overview:
Our client is seeking a full-time Consultant Psychiatrist to join their team, providing psychiatric care to adult male and female patients. The role offers the opportunity to work within a multi-disciplinary team, providing high-quality care to patients experiencing mental health crises.

The Role:
Working in an acute mental health unit offering 24-hour admission services, supporting local NHS services and PICU wards. The unit provides therapeutic engagement to patients with conditions such as schizophrenia, personality disorders, depression, and bipolar disorder. For many patients, this will be their first admission to a mental health ward, and the multi-disciplinary team works to support them through their crisis and into recovery, with the goal of discharge back to the community.

The Consultant Psychiatrist will lead the clinical team, ensuring safe and effective service delivery and providing clinical leadership. The role will also involve contributing to the governance of the unit and supporting the ongoing development of services.

Responsibilities:

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Act as the Consultant and Responsible Clinician (RC) as part of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT).
  • Take responsibility for patient care, treatment plans, and assessments alongside the MDT.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments, treatment planning, and facilitate collaboration with external stakeholders and carers.
  • Chair MDT and CPA meetings, ensuring adherence to organisational policies and procedures.
  • Ensure timely discharge notifications and summaries are provided to GPs.
  • Contribute to unit governance through expertise and leadership.
  • Prepare and supervise reports for Mental Health Act Review Tribunals and Managers Hearings, including presenting evidence.
  • Participate in a non-resident on-call rota with a frequency of no more than 1:7.

Management Responsibilities:

  • Provide clinical leadership in collaboration with the Ward Manager.
  • Ensure the ward complies with organisational and regulatory requirements.
  • Attend governance meetings, working with the ward manager on quality improvement initiatives and organisational goals.

Academic Responsibilities:

  • Attend and contribute to monthly academic meetings.
  • Deliver case presentations and teaching.
  • Participate in audit, research, and quality improvement initiatives.

Requirements:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree with MRCPsych and s12/AC approval.
  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, the Mental Capacity Act 2005, and related Codes of Practice.
  • Commitment to continued professional development.
  • Desirable: Significant experience in inpatient acute mental health units.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
