Job Title: Trainee Legal Executive / Legal Executive

Location: Essex

Main Purpose of the Role:

To assist the Legal Department in providing an efficient and effective legal service to Essex Police, particularly in the preparation, submission, and presentation of applications for Domestic Violence Protection Orders (DVPOs) and similar civil orders. You will support the legal team with operational legal matters and civil claims, ensuring the protection of victims of violence/abuse.

Key Responsibilities:Trainee Legal Executive:
  • Support the legal team in the delivery of services related to civil law, particularly focusing on DVPOs and breach proceedings.
  • Collate and evaluate evidence to support applications for civil orders, including DVPOs and breach proceedings.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of applications for civil orders to the magistrates' court.
  • Attend court to assist with DVPO and DVPN applications and breach proceedings.
  • Provide support to the team, including research and the preparation of case files.
  • Assist in monitoring and improving the use and effectiveness of DVPOs and DVPNs (or any future replacement orders).
  • Liaise with witnesses, collect evidence, and ensure readiness for hearings.
  • Maintain accurate records of DVPOs, DVPNs, and related proceedings.
Legal Executive:
  • Manage a personal caseload of civil matters, including DVPOs and breach proceedings, through the full legal process.
  • Represent Essex Police at court, presenting DVPO applications and related cases.
  • Provide legal advice to officers and others regarding civil orders aimed at preventing domestic violence/abuse and protecting victims.
  • Oversee and advise on the investigation of civil claims made by or against the Chief Constable.
  • Ensure the effective and efficient use of DVPOs and DVPNs across the force area.
  • Mentor and support junior members of the legal team, ensuring best practices are followed.

Necessary Experience & Qualifications:

  • Trainee Legal Executive:
    • Working towards or recently obtained Membership of the Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX).
    • Minimum of 4 GCSEs (grades A-C), including English or equivalent.
    • Experience or interest in court and legal processes, with an eagerness to learn and develop in the role.
  • Legal Executive:
    • Fully qualified Legal Executive (CILEX) with experience managing legal cases.
    • Proven advocacy skills and experience attending court, particularly in civil law or domestic violence-related matters.
    • Experience with legal processes, evidence handling, and providing legal advice.
    • Previous police or court experience is desirable but not essential.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage a caseload efficiently and effectively.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving ability, with a proactive approach.
  • IT literate, including email, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to travel for business purposes, with occasional weekend work.
