About the TeamSurrey Youth Justice Service (YJS) is a high performing multi-agency partnership which provides services before and after court to meet the statutory requirements of the youth justice system. The YJS sits in the Safeguarding Adolescents portfolio and is committed to integrated working to achieve its primary aim of preventing offending and reduce reoffending by children. Additionally, the service seeks to repair the harm caused to victims and communities by addressing the root causes of offending and reoffending by children.

About the RoleA fantastic opportunity has arisen in Surrey's Youth Justice Service (YJS) for a Restorative Practitioner to join our central team and co-ordinate our responses to victims of youth crime.

Surrey's Youth Justice Service is made up of three area based teams who work with children who have either been given an out of court disposal for offending behaviour or who have gone through the Court process and received an outcome. In addition, there is a YJS Central team, which has co-ordination and oversight of all the youth justice functions in Surrey. This team provides technical support, guidance, and drives practice, learning, improvement and service development, to ensure consistency across the three area-based teams.

The main element of the Restorative Practitioner role is contacting victims of youth crime across Surrey, predominantly for out of court disposals but this will also include some court outcomes. This contact is undertaken regardless of the type of crime, including sensitive or complex cases. You will offer victims a chance to talk to you about what has happened to them and explore with them if there is anything the child might be able to do to make amends.

You will support and facilitate face to face meetings, shuttle mediation between both parties, and work with children to understand the victim's perspective. You will work closely with the Youth Justice Practitioners to assess and prepare children and victims for all restorative approaches. When the offence committed has been very serious or in complicated circumstances, you will work closely with Surrey Police officers and the Victim and Witness Care Unit to plan the best approach to the victim.

Shortlisting CriteriaTo be considered for shortlisting for this position, your application will clearly evidence the following:

  • Experience of working with victims of crime and a commitment to meeting the Victim's Code of Practice with a good understanding of restorative approaches
  • A relevant degree / vocational qualification and/or relevant restorative practice training
  • Commitment to Child First principles and an understanding of the needs of children who offend
  • Proven written and oral communication and interpersonal skills with good negotiation and influencing skills, and the ability to maintain effective working relationships at all levels
  • High level problem solving skills with the capacity to devise and implement innovative solutions
  • Ability to communicate with compassion and authority in challenging situations and with resistant individuals, be able to effectively engage with people in complex situations both short-term and building relationships over time

The role holder will need to have the willingness and ability to travel around the county to meet the demands of the role.
