Job Summary:
The Health Care Assistant (HCA) is a member of the ward / department team who implements prescribed care and / or undertakes activities as directed by a registered nurse.
Role Overview:
Responsibilities vary based on area and may include direct patient care, communication, and support tasks.
Patient Care:- Hygiene Assistance: Support with washing, bathing, oral care, hair care, and nail cleaning.
- Feeding Support: Help patients select food, assist with feeding, track intake, and handle mealtime clean up.
- Elimination Needs: Assist with bedpans, urinals, commodes, and incontinence care, and document outputs when necessary.
- Help with patient mobility, repositioning, and dressing.
- Prepare and tidy patient areas, including beds and examination rooms.
- Support patients during treatment, physiotherapy, or recreational activities.
- Assist with measuring vital signs, height, and weight under supervision.
- Provide care for dying or deceased patients, including preparation for the mortuary.
- Accompany patients to departments and chaperone professional staff as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality and a professional relationship with patients and staff.
- Report concerns to the nurse in charge and assist visitors.
- Answer phones, attend meetings, and ensure clear communication.
- Maintain cleanliness of areas and equipment.
- Perform clerical tasks, including reception duties, filing, and preparing medical notes.
- Complete the Trust's core skills program within 36 months of appointment.
