Behaviour Support Assistant PRU

To work under the instruction/guidance of the Centre Manager to support the teaching staff in working with young people and those with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. To help raise pupils standards of achievement and help enable them to become independent learners. To play a proactive role in positive behaviour management as well as interacting with the young people during extra-curricular times, encouraging them to participate in the social and academic life of the school.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Support for Pupils:

  • Use specialist (behavioural) skills/training/experience to support pupils
  • Be available and present in the building, both Distington and Whitehaven, for support with behaviour both in lessons and during break periods, and at the beginning and end of the day
  • Assist with the development and implementation of IEPs and PBPs
  • Establish productive working relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and setting high expectations
  • Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils within the classroom and within the wider school community
  • Support pupils consistently whilst recognising and responding to their individual needs
  • Encourage pupils to interact and work co-operatively with others and engage all pupils in activities

Support for Colleagues:

  • Assist in the recording of pupils progress with regard to social, emotional and behavioural progress
  • Contribute to the management of pupils' behaviour, both in the classroom and around the school, as required
  • Provide support for learning activities
  • Assist in the maintenance of a safe environment for pupils and staff
  • Assist in the presentation of display materials

Key Requirements

  • GCSE A* - C in Mathematics and English, or equivalent
  • Full working knowledge of relevant policies/codes of practice and awareness of relevant legislation
  • Awareness of themes underlying Keeping children Safe in Education
  • Awareness of pupils diverse needs, backgrounds and aptitudes
  • Working knowledge of a range of additional needs and strategies that may be employed to overcome barriers to learning
  • Previous experience of working within a mainstream school, special needs or specialist setting
  • Experience of providing educational support to pupils within a mainstream class, in a small group or on an individual basis
  • Experience of developing and sharing strategies to meet a specific area of additional need
  • Experience of planning, developing and reviewing support to meet the needs of individual students
  • Experience of monitoring, recording and reviewing student progress
  • Experience of liaising with external agencies
