Job Description:
We are seeking a compassionate and motivated British Sign Language (BSL) Teaching Assistant to join our team at a school in South Birmingham.
As a BSL Teaching Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting students with hearing impairments, ensuring they have access to a high-quality education in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide one-to-one and group support for students who use BSL.
- Assist teachers in adapting classroom materials and lessons to suit the needs of hearing-impaired students.
- Foster an inclusive learning environment by facilitating communication between students, teachers, and peers using BSL.
- Help with the development of students' literacy, numeracy, and other academic skills through tailored support.
- Encourage social interaction and participation in class and school activities.
- Support the emotional well-being and personal development of students with hearing impairments.
- Assist with classroom duties, including preparing resources and setting up learning spaces.
- Collaborate with teachers and special educational needs coordinators (SENCO) to monitor and track student progress.
Essential Qualifications and Skills:
- Minimum Level 2 qualification in British Sign Language (BSL), with a willingness to work towards Level 3 if not already obtained.
- Previous experience working in an educational setting or with children and young people, preferably those with hearing impairments.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
- Patience, empathy, and an understanding of the needs of students with hearing impairments.
- An understanding of safeguarding and child protection policies.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience working with Special Educational Needs (SEN) students.
- A qualification in teaching or educational support.
