We have an exciting new role become available for a Temporary Part-Time Legal Assistant to work for South Gloucestershire Council at their offices in Badmington Road, Yate.

You will be working 22 hours a week. Days/hours to be agreed within Monday to Friday. Usually Thursday in the office as a minimum. Working from home on occasion is likely to be an option.*

Purpose of the role is - To provide assistance within a key service including in the supervision of a team of staff where relevant.

Work that assignment will cover:

  • Advise social workers on the Re X process to authorise a deprivation of liberty in the community and filing the application with the court.
  • Keep a record of the progress of cases filed with the court, the orders made and follow this up with social workers to ensure that the Local Authority complies with court orders.
  • Assist solicitors by completing applications to the court under section 16 Mental Capacity Act 2005 for welfare orders, updating bundles, e-filing orders, obtaining sealed orders and actioning court directions.
  • Undertake legal research for solicitors and provide advice to the client department on care and support, mental health law and education law.
  • Attend round table meetings and court hearings with counsel, where necessary.

Experience Required

  • The candidate will have a law degree or CILEx level 6 Diploma in Law and Practice or relevant post-graduate qualification. SQE or LPC desirable although not essential.
  • Experience of working in a legal department, with particular emphasis on adult social care work, mental capacity issues or education law, ideally in a Local Authority setting.
  • Knowledge of Adult Social Care law and court processes - essential.
  • Able to work as part of a team under pressure within tight timescales and have the ability to build and maintain positive working arrangements with colleagues, clients and all other relevant parties.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as, excellent organisational and IT skills
