The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a major rail infrastructure project aimed at enhancing the connectivity, reliability, and capacity of the railway between Manchester and York via Leeds and Huddersfield. The project encompasses track renewals, electrification, station upgrades, and a range of civil engineering works to future-proof this vital transport corridor.

Role Overview:

We are seeking an experienced CDM / Principal Designer to join our client'sdynamic project team. In this key role, you will ensure that all design aspects of the TRU project comply with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015. You will lead on health and safety throughout the design process, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to identify and mitigate risks, ensuring a safe and efficient project delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design safety process across the TRU project, ensuring compliance with CDM Regulations 2015.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including clients, designers, and contractors, to integrate safety considerations into all phases of design.
  • Review and coordinate designs, ensuring that risk management is embedded into the project.
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop risk mitigation strategies in consultation with design teams.
  • Maintain up-to-date project documentation, including design risk registers and health and safety files.
  • Liaise with the project management team to ensure design deliverables align with project milestones.
  • Support the development of safety culture within the project, providing training and guidance where necessary.
  • Monitor compliance and performance, carrying out audits and inspections as required.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Chartered status or working towards Chartered status (e.g., CEng, RIBA, ICE, IOSH).
  • Extensive experience in a CDM / Principal Designer role within large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015 and their application in complex projects.
  • Proven track record of successfully delivering projects within the rail or transport sector.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
  • Proficiency in using relevant design and risk management software.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in the rail sector, particularly in projects involving electrification, civil engineering, or station upgrades.
  • NEBOSH or similar safety qualifications.
  • Familiarity with BIM and other digital engineering tools.
