We are seeking a Planning Lawyer to provide and manage legal support for the Council’s various agendas. This role involves offering legal advice and support on matters relating to Town and Country Planning, Highway Law, and Compulsory Purchase, under the direction of the Principal Legal Officer.

Day to Day of the role:
  • Deliver legal advice and support in legal specialisms including Town and Country Planning, Highway Law, and Compulsory Purchase.
  • Provide high-quality and timely legal advice to the Council, its officers, and elected members in various forms such as written or oral advice, drafting documentation, and advocacy.
  • Handle planning inquiries and Judicial Review processes.
  • Prepare strategic, local, and neighbourhood plans.

  • Prepare and present training programmes to ensure relevant legal knowledge is up-to-date across the Council.
  • Conduct all work in accordance with internal policies and procedures, including the effective use of case management and time recording systems.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Qualified as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court, Barrister, or a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives with a current practising certificate.
  • Knowledge and experience in Planning Law.
  • Proven experience in advocacy.
  • High standard of drafting, negotiating, presentation, communication, and personal organisation skills.
  • Understanding of Value for Money in service delivery.
  • Knowledge of the legislative framework within Local Government.
  • Demonstrated success in working with partners to achieve common goals.
