Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people? Do you have the resilience and dedication to support students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? We are seeking a Behaviour Mentor to join a specialist school in York, dedicated to supporting students who require additional guidance to thrive in their education.

About the School:

  • A specialist setting catering to students aged 5-16 who face barriers to learning due to SEMH needs, behavioural difficulties, or additional SEND requirements.
  • Provides a nurturing and structured environment where students receive tailored support to help them reach their full potential.
  • Staff work closely with multi-agency professionals, including educational psychologists, social workers, and therapists, to create individualised learning and behaviour plans.
  • Focuses on restorative practice, emotional well-being, and positive behaviour reinforcement to encourage engagement in learning.

About the Role of Behaviour Mentor:

  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students to support their emotional well-being and engagement in education.
  • Work on a 1:1 basis or in small groups, delivering targeted interventions to improve behaviour, social skills, and self-esteem.
  • Assist in de-escalating challenging behaviour using positive behaviour management techniques.
  • Provide academic and pastoral support, ensuring students can access learning in a structured and supportive way.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral staff to implement behaviour strategies and intervention plans.
  • Encourage students to develop resilience, confidence, and coping mechanisms to succeed both in and out of school.

As the ideal Behaviour Mentor, you should have:

  • Experience working with challenging behaviour, SEMH needs, or SEND students (within a school, youth work, or care setting).
  • A calm, patient, and resilient approach, with excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to build rapport with students who may have experienced trauma, exclusion, or disengagement from education.
  • Strong behaviour management skills and the ability to remain professional in challenging situations.
  • A commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and promoting positive outcomes for young people.
