Head of Operational Estates

Are you an experienced leader in estates management, ready to take on a critical role within the NHS?

York Teaching Hospital Facilities Management (YTHFM) is recruiting a skilled Head of Operational Estates to drive the Estates service forward and ensure its hospital environment remains safe, efficient, and patient-focused.

The Estates team is a patient, visitor and staff-driven department focused on delivering a range of high quality, safe Estates services in a cost effective, consistent, and friendly manner.

Core focus of the Head of Operational Estates role

You will lead the strategic development and operational delivery of the Estates service across all Trust sites. In addition, your focus will be on:

• Ensuring all planned preventative and reactive maintenance is delivered efficiently and customer focused.
• Providing expert guidance to ensure statutory and mandatory compliance for all facilities.
• Overseeing estate business continuity plans and emergency response protocols.
• Collaborating with clinical and technical teams on long-term infrastructure planning and improvements.

Day to day of the role

You'll play a pivotal role in shaping the Estates strategy, ensuring the Trust’s infrastructure is compliant, efficient, and future proof. You will lead and motivate a team to achieve high standards, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and exceptional customer service.

Operational Management

• Manage and prioritise maintenance schedules, ensuring the smooth operation of all hospital engineering services.
• Develop and implement a 3- and 5-year maintenance and equipment replacement plan.
• Ensure emergency situations are effectively managed, maintaining seamless services across the Trust.

Compliance & Performance

You will ensure full compliance with relevant legislation, conducting regular audits and assessments. Performance monitoring will be key, as you work to improve the efficiency of estates services through effective data analysis, benchmarking, and KPIs.

Key skills and experience

• Expertise in managing complex engineering and building services, with a strong understanding of NHS regulations.
• Experience in developing long-term estates plans, including maintenance and compliance strategies.
• Proven leadership ability, with experience motivating large teams and fostering a culture of high performance.
• Strong financial management skills, including experience managing budgets, developing business cases, and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
