Learning Support Assistant  

Are you passionate about supporting young adults with special educational needs? Do you have experience working with learners in a higher education setting? GSL Education is looking for a dedicated Learning Support Assistant to provide 1:1 support to students with additional needs for a College in York.

Position: Learning Support Assistant (Higher Education)
Hours: 37 hours per week
Contract: 3-month contract (initially)
Location: York, North Yorkshire

The Role:

As a Learning Support Assistant (LSA), you will provide essential 1:1 support to higher education students with special educational needs (SEN). This role involves working closely with students to enable them to succeed in their studies and achieve their academic goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • 1:1 Support: Provide tailored, one-to-one support to students with SEN, helping them engage with their coursework and navigate their learning challenges.
  • Academic Assistance: Support students in understanding and completing assignments, managing study skills, and staying organised.
  • Pastoral Support: Offer emotional and motivational support, ensuring students feel confident and capable in their studies.
  • Collaboration with Staff: Work closely with teaching staff and the Student Support Team to ensure the student’s learning plan is followed, and their needs are met effectively.
  • Study Skills: Help students develop study and time management skills to enable independent learning and progression.
  • Monitoring Progress: Keep detailed records of student progress and report regularly to the Student Support Team.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experience in SEN Support: Previous experience supporting students with special educational needs is essential, ideally in a higher education or further education environment.
  • Strong Communication Skills: The ability to communicate effectively and build positive relationships with both students and staff.
  • Empathy and Patience: A caring, patient approach with a commitment to understanding and meeting the individual needs of students.
  • Organisation and Initiative: The ability to manage time effectively, work independently, and respond proactively to the needs of the student.
  • Relevant Qualifications: You must be educated to Degree Level with a 2:2 or higher.

Contract Details:
This is an initial 3-month contract with the potential for extension. The role is for 37 hours per week, working across Monday to Friday.
