Our employees are not only part of history, they're making history. Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking an Aircraft Sheet Metal Mechanic to join its Flight Test team. This position is located in Linthicum, Maryland. Primary function: Plan, perform and coordinate all aircraft sheet metal fabrication activities, aero structure assembly, and support qualified FAA Certificated Airframe & Powerplant Mechanics on installation of fabricated components. Improvise tooling and methods as required to complete the job. Certify all required work and provide certification evidence to stakeholders. Keep apprised of and assure compliance with all applicable federal government and civilian regulations pertaining to the repair and modification of aircraft. Fabricate, assemble, install, and repair production sheet metal products and equipment in accordance with blueprints, drawings, and specifications. Make sheet metal layouts; set up and operate fabricating machinery; shape metal using press brakes, english wheels and shrinker-stretcher machines; and verify assemblies and installations for conformance to supplied documentation or direct collaboration with engineering or aircraft maintenance departments. Working procedure and/or responsibility assigned: Coordinate all operations necessary to perform the complete inspection, modification and servicing of fabricated components/assemblies. Work from such information as applicable repair manuals, technical directives, drawings, process specifications and oral and/or written instructions. Requires a thorough knowledge of the aircraft including aircraft structures, components, mechanical systems, and the interrelationships of the various systems. Schedule various fabrication, assembly and installation work to be performed and coordinate the performance of all operations with applicable staff including aircraft crew chiefs, inspectors, management, operations and engineering. Prepare status reports as necessary. Notify supervision of schedule delays and problems encountered and make recommendations to resolve such situations. Answer inquiries concerning the status of fabrication, assembly, and modification activity to all stakeholders. Assist supervision in determining tooling and equipment requirements. Devise and improvise necessary special tooling and equipment as necessary. Discuss functional requirements, problems with systems, components and material utilized on aircraft with supervision, to resolve problems concerning modifications and maintenance to be performed. Check to ensure that all test equipment used is calibrated according to schedule. Maintain accurate records of all actions taken or required in accordance with all FAA and military regulations. Furnish FAA Certificated personnel with necessary logs, inspection cards and the like. Distill work requests into job travelers, breaking fabrication, assembly, and installation work into subtasks. Maintain work area, hangar, ramp, shops, and ground support equipment in a clean and orderly fashion. Perform other miscellaneous duties which may fall within the scope of this position. This may be a 1st or 2nd shift position. This is a SEA Union represented position. This is a 1st shift position. Education requirement(s): High School Graduate or the equivalent. Experience requirement(s): Four (4) years’ experience as a sheet metal fabricator, making aerospace components or fabricating aircraft structure in the military. industrial or commercial aviation field. Ability to read and interpret schematics and drawings. Proficient with operating typical sheet metal fabrication tools including hydraulic press brake, hydraulic shear, Roller, Punch, Close Tolerance Drilling Operations, and familiarity with aircraft fastening systems. Preferred Qualifications: FAA Airframe & Powerplant Certification, or FAA Airframe Certification. Experience performing major aircraft modifications and major structural repairs. Proficient with sheet metal and composite fabrication, assembly, modification and repair for aircraft and aircraft components. Ability to work in a collaborative environment with FAA A&P Mechanics, Inspectors, Test Pilots, and Engineers to maintain and modify a fleet of research & development aircraft. Be current in the aviation field within the previous 24 months.
