Howmet Aerospace is searching for a Sr Process Engineer, Casting to join our Howmet Wheel Systems (HWS) business unit in Barberton, OH.

This position is for a role at Howmet Aerospace’s Barberton Cast House. The plant operates a state-of-the-art and highly automated continuous horizontal aluminum casting operation on a nonstop (24/7/365) schedule. This is a fast paced and safety critical operation.

Job Dimensions:

The Sr Process Engineer, Casting will team with engineering and manufacturing to ensure that the casting processes are performed in compliance with methods, materials, and equipment specifications for aluminum castings.

The Sr Process Engineer, Casting will develop casting process improvements including:

  • YoY improvements in
    • Productivity
    • Throughput
    • Quality rate
    • Foundry reliability
    • Cost
  • Support operations to achieve production targets
  • Developing and enhancing robust manufacturing/metallurgical processes in aluminum casting.
  • Developing technical engineering solutions to improve current manufacturing processes and developing new processes and product enhancements for Howmet Wheel Systems.
  • Providing leadership to drive continuous process improvements through the application of continuous improvement tools and lean methodologies.
  • Providing project management to implement new processes within HWS and with outside sources.

Major Activities & Key Challenges: 

The principal challenge of this position is to develop manufacturing friendly technical engineering solutions to improve HWS’s current products and processes as well as identify new product enhancements and develop their accompanying new processes. The incumbent’s efforts will focus on developing and implementing new technologies as well as creatively adapting existing technologies and processes to create value for the business. 

The incumbent’s challenges specifically include:

  • Developing manufacturing-friendly process improvements and new processes.  Test to prove the concept, develop supporting a business case, resolve technical issues, prove process robustness, startup manufacturing processes, transfer technology and prepare process documentation.
  • Developing product enhancements and new products. Provide product samples, conduct necessary tests to prove the concept, develop supporting business case and prepare process documentation.
  • Work with global locations to generate innovative ideas that will provide opportunities to either reduce manufacturing costs or enhance our products functionality. 
  • Develop implementation plans including cost justifications and capital generation.  Ensure that capital projects are managed within the corporate budget guidelines.
  • Ensure that new processes are installed to meet all Howmet and regulatory standards for both operation and product reliability.
  • The Sr Process Engineer, Casting, is expected to develop his/her own projects plans and execute them after review with plant leadership.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Due to the highly technical nature of this position, an engineering degree or other suitable technical education, is required. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a molten metal manufacturing environment; casting and foundry preferred.
  • ​Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong technical background in the casting process and foundry experience is preferred
  • Incumbent must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, managerial skills and the ability to work independently. 
  • Knowledge of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods or NDE certification is preferred
  • The incumbent must also possess a high degree of people skills as he/she must motivate and influence others. 
  • In addition to knowledge of conventional aluminum processing, incumbent must have a thorough understanding of the Howmet Aerospace Business System and methods for assessing process capability and driving continuous improvements. 
  • The incumbent must also have demonstrated the ability to deal effectively with people under varying circumstances.
