LSF is looking for a talented Part- Time Academic Mentor who wants to make an impact in the lives of others.
This is a part time role.
Purpose & Impact:
Academic Mentors help residents learn and understand new concepts, complete homework assignments, and develop skills to be successful students and lifelong learners.
Essential Functions:
- Provide ongoing coaching and direct mentorship to youth to achieve their academic goals in their education and individualized service plans; makes recommendations to supervisor for development.
- Work closely with supervisor and colleagues to facilitate activities and discussions designed to promote academic growth and achievement.
- Help residents overcome academic challenges, such as absences, poor grades, or homework problems.
- Oversee Education Plan approval from parents and case workers.
- Provide program overview of academics to help in client future professional quest.
- Assist residents in achieving passing grades in a non-judgmental approach.
- Help students develop strategies for learning based on their individual learning style.
- Help students grow in confidence and ability.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Other Functions:
- Must demonstrate sensitivity to our service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics and needs
- Work on special projects such as outreach, education or special events with minimal supervision.
Physical Requirements:
- Able to sit and stand for long periods of time, utilizes telephone, computer, and other office equipment.
- Able to work in a fast paced environment.
- Must be able to work flexible hours and weekends.
Education:
- Some post-secondary education required with a preference for Associate’s degree or above.
Experience:
- Two years’ experience working with a diverse youth client base; experience working with youth in an organized/structured setting preferred.
Skills:
- Must have strong organizational skills, attention to detail.
- Must have problem-solving skills.
- Able to work independently and with minimal supervision (initiative).
- Understand the “3-A” s of mentorship: available, analytical, and an active listener.
- Dependable and reliable.
Other:
- Ability to successfully pass a Level II background screening and drug test.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record for last (2) years.
- Authorized to work in the United States.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Reports to Life Skills and Education Supervisor
- Must be a team player.
- Accurate, complete and timely submission of required reports and documentation
- Effective working relationship with clients.
- Adherence to LSF policies and procedures.
