Under the general direction of the Nurse Manager and in collaboration with Nursing Education, the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) practices within the Lahey Hospital and Medical Center Professional Practice Model, MA State Nurse Practice Act and ANA Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics and demonstrates Lahey Hospital and Medical Center’s core values that reflect its mission. The CNL role provides horizontal leadership accountable for the management of care and the care environment through knowing the patient, communication and lateral integration of care. The CNL serves as a change agent to translate and integrate evidence into practice; to design and evaluate care and improve outcomes. Implements change and willingness to challenge established ways of doing things in a constructive way. Exemplifies a strong, positive attitude toward internal and external customers and continuous service improvement.

The CNL provides care indirectly to patients and in collaboration with other health care team members. The CNL works productively and
effectively within a complex environment, handling multiple/changing priorities and dealing with demands associated with a tertiary patient care environment such as, varying patient needs and staffing resources.

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: including but not limited to: I. Clinical Practice and Leadership: In collaboration with the Nurse Manager (NM), the CNL delegates and manages the clinical nursing team resources and serves as a leader and partner in the interdisciplinary health care team. Coordinates the delivery of care of multiple disciplines actively involved in the patient’s care. Serves as an advocate for the professional and the interdisciplinary health care team.   

A.    Serves as a change agent to design and evaluate care in order to improve patient outcomes and the patient experience   

B.    Serves as a resource to charge nurse in order to match varying patient need and staffing resources including the competence level and experience of nursing staff     

C.    Develops, implements, and assures compliance with Nursing Practice Standards.   

D.    Encourages staff participation on Shared Governance Councils, nursing committees, and organization committees

E.    Maintains extensive knowledge of current professional/clinical issues and uses evidence-based resources to deliver nursing care to specific patient populations.   

F.    In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, promotes excellence in nursing practice and the nursing process by  serving as a clinical resource to nursing staff and the interdisciplinary team. 

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing is required.  Masters of Science, Nursing or equivalent advanced degree in health related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience in order to have full understanding of Nursing leadership and Education functions is preferred. 

• Licensure, Certification, Registration:   • Current licensure to practice professional nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. • Life Support Certification: BLS 

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Possesses analytical ability to define unit or service procedures, to independently oversee the application of methods guides and processes, to apply sound judgment in choosing proper course of action among multiple options, to interpret policies to assists in planning short to midrange goals and determining measures and to assess and monitor progress toward unit goal attainment.
  • Advanced critical-thinking skills, and the ability to identify improvement in clinical operations.
  • Conflict resolution skills, including diplomacy, tact and listening skills, are required.
  • Ability to prioritize in order to optimize time most effectively and efficiently and problem solve various situations.
  • Must exhibit advanced interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal.  
  • Ability to lead, teach, mentor and develop staff.  
  • Ability to motivate others.  
  • Ability to present information that is easily understood by learner and able to select and modify materials provided to patient and other health care staff based on the learners ability.

Computer competency: Shows how to use a standard desktop and windows based computer system, including a basic understanding of email, e-learning, intranet and computer navigation.  Competency in the use of spreadsheets, databases, and functions of the job. 

Experience: Progressive experience in health care including involvement in direct patient care, staff education, and problem solving of unit or organizational issues.

3 years current, relevant nursing experience is required.  

An additional 1-3 years of training and education experience is required, preferably in a healthcare setting.
