Overview
Functions under the direction of the unit supervisor/manager. Must be flexible with work hours to meet department needs. Must be dependable, accountable and cooperative. Able to independently perform job functions.

Assists with providing safe, age appropriate care to the patient by performing all exams provided by the department according to department procedures.

Has the knowledge and ability to properly and safely obtain a quality diagnostic study.

Responsible for performing a wide variety of technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative in the utilization of the equipment for the diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases.

ESWL: Sets up the lithotripsy equipment and/or C-arm to provide imaging services. Positions patient, using fluoroscopy to ensure guided treatment to precise location of the stone. Provides an image of the patients' kidney/ureteral stone(s) for treatment. Collaborates with surgeon, nurse, and anesthesia provider to provide safe, quality care. Assists with monitoring patient for movement or if patient experiences pain during the procedure requiring treatment at a lower power. Must remain focused on the image of the stone and the power level of the machine for the procedure duration, 30-90 minutes depending on the size of the stone. If necessary, the technologist will provide assistance to the anesthesia provider to connect patient to an EKG monitor connected to the lithotripter allowing pacing during the procedure.

Ability to move the equipment in and out of treatment room, and transporting the lithotripter between facilities in a WellStar vehicle, remaining with equipment to provide lithotripsy services, and returning equipment to primary location. Must have a current driver's license and affidavit on file with WellStar Risk Management in order to drive the transport vehicle between WellStar facilities.

Responsible for calibrating and operating the C-arm for all procedures requiring fluoroscopy.

Responsible for radiation safety.

Responsible for tracking outcomes data.

Responsibilities
Core Responsibilites and Essential Functions

  • Patient Care/Safety and Quality
    * a. Understands and demonstrates AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, and Thank-you)
    * b. Identifies patient by using 2 identifiers
    * c. Understands standards, policy and procedures in a surgical suite
    * d. Understands, participates, demonstrates and documents, when appropriate, pre-procedure verification and Time Out process
    * e. Demonstrates and understands pre and post procedural care.
    * f. Assists the OR team, as needed, with patient education pre procedure
    * g. Preps the patient for the procedure.
    * h. Demonstrates and understands sterile technique, prepares trays/catheters for procedures.
    * i. Demonstrates IV Administration competence and maintenance, IV module
    * j. Prepares and may administer contrast. Understands preparation/administration of doses type of contrasts according to patients weight, physician order and lab work (GFR).
    * k. Identifying, preparing and/or administering medications as prescribed by a licensed independent practitioner.
    * l. Uses appropriate size shielding device with patients, visitors, and technologist, as needed
    * m. Understands anatomical positioning, correct labeling of body parts, and infant immobilizer.
    * n. Uses appropriate technical factors to complete images supporting ALARA
    * o. Reviews images for technical quality
    * p. Completes paperwork, including computer data entry.
    * q. Completes charges appropriately and timely
    * r. Performs QC functions in PACS
    * s. Communicates equipment failure to management and biomed immediately
    * t. Communicates changes in stone formation during/after ESWL treatment
    * u. Assists in monitoring for arrhythmias and applies pacing as appropriate at the direction of the anesthesia provider
    * v. Provides fluro time to circulator
    * w. Provides images pre and post to surgeon as requested
  • Customer Focus/Communication
    * a. Displays a positive attitude and supports WellStar’s Credo, Vision and Mission
    * b. Verifies written orders
    * c. Practices RBAC (Read Back and Confirm) when taking verbal orders.
    * d. Provides privacy for patients/customers
    * e. Knows the existing lines of communication and authority, handles communications properly.

    * h. Routinely checks the STAT work list
    * i. Sends reports to appropriate area
    * j. Able to explain monthly/quarterly data relating to Press Ganey Customer Service Scores
    * k. Meets service recovery and customer service guidelines as needed
  • Actively participates in a Team Center Approach
    * a. Take call when necessary
    * b. Transports patients, as needed
    * c. Assists in other MI areas and as needed in other departments in the system
    * d. Assists with pending work reports to ensure images are read in a timely manner
    * e. Functions as Clinical Instructor for students in Radiology Technology programs
    * f. Participates in training Lithotripsy technology to new team members
    * g. Communicates changes with physicians, nurses, and other team members
    * h. Maintains good working relationships with Leadership, Staff, Physicians and Co-Workers.

  • Qualifications
    Required Minimum Education

  • Graduate of AMA approved School of Radiology Technology. Required

  • Required Minimum Experience

  • Minimum 2 years as a Registered Radiologic Technologist Required and
  • Experience in Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) for renal/ureteral stone treatment Preferred

  • Required Minimum Skills

  • Knowledge and experience with ultrasound a plus.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills required.
  • Ability to work with medical professionals, patients, team members, and customers.
  • Ability to set up and calibrate ESWL and C-Arm equipment.
  • Ability to work with and comply with all physician directives, regulations and standards, and facility requirements.
