Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Launch and Missile Defense Systems has an exciting career opportunity for a Principal Engineer Software – SW Engineer (RA) to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Colorado Springs, CO.
Position Overview:
The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program integrates the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that enables the U.S. president, secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, to see the battle develop collectively, and to dynamically manage designated networked sensors and weapons systems to achieve global and regional mission objectives.
C2BMC supports a layered missile defense capability that enables an optimized response to threats of all ranges in all phases of flight. C2BMC is the force multiplier that globally and regionally networks integrate, synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations to optimize performance. C2BMC is integral to all system ground and flight tests, which verify and exercise all current and future missile defense system capabilities.
This position is for a Principal Software Engineer on the C2BMC program. The candidate will be responsible for software development in Java. Accountable for performing in-depth analysis and technical support of systems software products, including complex problem resolution, design, development, testing, operational integration, and user support. Maintains, debugs, and configures related software products. Works from specifications to develop or modify operating systems applications. Assisted with design, coding, benchmark testing, debugging, and program documentation. Interfaces with other system support groups to resolve problems, set standards, and improve the overall efficiency of the operating system. Designs, codes, tests, and implements tools for operations automation. Works on most phases of software systems programming applications and may require instruction and guidance.
Essential Functions:
- Command and control system application development.
- Automated test and pipeline development experience.
- Test-driven development.
- Experience developing software for Unix/Linux and Windows platforms.
- Experience with Software Integration testing, including developing automated test scripts.
- Strong problem-solving skills, including reviewing performance issues, identifying root causes, and recommending and developing a solution.
- Must have practical oral and written communication skills and an ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment.
- Experience with performance modeling.
- Experience with microservices.
- Experience with DevSecOps and/or build management.
- Designing and building Graphical User Interfaces.
- Good verbal and written communication skills, can work independently, and possess the poise and flexibility required to work in a highly dynamic environment.
- Good working knowledge of MS Office products.
Basic Qualifications:
Please note your updated security clearance and IAT/relevant certifications on your resume, if applicable.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline preferred from an accredited university and 5 years of related experience, or a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years of experience, or 9 years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
- Applicants must have a current DoD issued Secret Security Clearance at the time of application which is required to start.
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 10% to support business needs.
- DoD 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (Security+, GSEC, SCNP, SSCP, CISSP, CISA, GSE, SCNA) is required to start or must be obtained within 60 days of the start date.
- Software engineering and software development with Java/JEE experience.
- Experience and knowledge of basic software practices such as coding standards and configuration management.
- Experience developing enterprise applications in Java on Linux.
- Familiarity with Java foundation classes and toolkits.
- Knowledge of server-side/database development and computer system administration.
- Experience working as part of an Agile team.
- Use common software development and management tools such as:
- Git
- Nexus
- JIRA
- Confluence
- Maven
- Gradle
- Eclipse
- Understanding standard system engineering design artifacts such as Use Cases and SysML diagrams.
- Experience with Risk Management Framework/STIG/Fortify/SonarQube mitigation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Flexibility and willingness to take on unanticipated tasks are highly desirable.

Salary Range: $97,500 - $146,300The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
