Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Launch and Missile Defense Systems has an exciting career opportunity for a Sr. Principal Software Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Colorado Springs, CO.

Position Overview:

This position is for a Sr. Principal Software Engineer on the C2BMC program. The selected candidate will be responsible for software development in the Java language for the Enterprise Services team. Under minimal direction, the candidate will provide specialized expertise within multiple systems and software disciplines and general knowledge of related disciplines, application implications, and customer areas. Will also assist with design, coding, benchmark testing, debugging, and documentation of programs. Interfaces with other system support groups to resolve problems, set standards, and improve the overall efficiency of the operating system.

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program integrates the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that enables the U.S. president, secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, to see the battle develop collectively, and to dynamically manage designated networked sensors and weapons systems to achieve global and regional mission objectives.

C2BMC supports a layered missile defense capability that enables an optimized response to threats of all ranges in all phases of flight. C2BMC is the force multiplier that globally and regionally networks integrate, synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations to optimize performance. C2BMC is integral to all system ground and flight tests, which verify and exercise all current and future missile defense system capabilities.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for performing in-depth analysis and technical support of systems software products, including complex problem resolution, design, development, testing, operational integration, and user support.
  • Maintains currency, debugs, and configures related software products.
  • Works from specifications to develop or modify operating systems applications.
  • Designs, codes, tests, and implements tools for operations automation.
  • Works on most phases of software systems programming applications and may require minor instruction and guidance in other phases.
  • Leadership position on small software focused teams may be required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline preferred from an accredited university and 8 years of related experience, or a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 6 years of experience, or a PhD and 4 years of experience, or 12 years of related experience in lieu of a degree may be considered.
  • Applicants must have a current active in-scope DoD issued secret security clearance at the time of application which is required to start.
  • DoD 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (Security+, GSEC, SCNP, SSCP, CISSP, CISA, GSE, SCNA) is required to start.
  • Software engineering and software development with strong Java/J2EE experience.
  • Experience and knowledge of software practices such as coding standards, automated testing, automated build pipelines, and configuration management.
  • Experience developing enterprise applications on Linux
  • Windows experience
  • Extensive experience with Java foundation classes and toolkits.
  • Knowledge of server-side/database development and computer system administration
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including reviewing performance and operational issues, identifying root causes, and recommending, designing, and implementing solutions.
  • Proven ability/experience to mentor and teach junior engineers.
  • Applicants must have excellent oral and written communication skills and an ability to work effectively in a rapid-paced team environment.
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on unanticipated tasks.
  • Use of standard software development and management tools such as:
    • Maven
    • Git/GitHub
    • Nexus
    • Eclipse
    • Experience with agile development methodologies
    • Understanding of standard system engineering design artifacts such as Use Cases and SysML diagrams

Preferred Qualifications:

  • C++ experience is highly desired
  • Agile team leadership experience is desired
  • Mentoring and guiding junior engineers is desired.
  • Net-centric, horizontal integration program expertise is a plus.
  • Command and control system application development.
  • Experience with Software Integration and formal testing.
  • Knowledge and experience implementing Cyber Security/RMF requirements.
  • Ability to present advanced concepts to non-software engineers, including senior program and military leaders.

Salary Range: $121,000 - $181,400
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
