Position Summary:

Sovah Danville is seeking a PRN Sterile Compounding Pharmacy Technician (SCPT) who must complete the required education and demonstrate competence in safe sterile compounding procedures. SCPTs must follow proper USP 797 procedures to maintain a sterile environment and prepare safe sterile products for patients. SCPTs must also be able to follow USP 800 standards to compound hazardous medications. SCPTs must perform calculations and compounding instructions, ensure proper documentation, and maintain a sterile environment while working under the supervisor of a Pharmacist. 

  • Assists the pharmacist in providing medication, drug information, and pharmaceutical services to patients, nurses, physicians, and other hospital personnel.
  • Requires completion of extra sterile compounding training which will be standardized by the Sovah Compounding Supervisor Pharmacist and/or Director of Pharmacy.
  • The SCPT works in sterile compounding and works in the chemo/oncology room on a regular basis.
  • Trains other staff for sterile compounding and assists with yearly competencies for Pharm Techs.
  • Leads monthly (and any extra) cleanings and trains others to assist.
  • Receives and stores incoming deliveries of medication and supplies.
  • Refills and maintains automated dispensing systems.
  • Fills medication carts on a daily basis; repackages bulk medications.
  • Prepares orders, such as intravenous solutions and admixtures.
  • Maintains inventory for the pharmacy department, including the inventory of supplies, and reorders them accordingly.
  • Refills and maintains all pharmacy automation including the robot and dispensing machines.
  • Monitors and documents to ensure all refrigerators, freezers, and room temperatures are appropriate, as required.
  • Restocks, updates, and replaces all drug boxes, trays, and crash carts in a timely manner.
  • Compounding, packing, and labeling medications.
  • Processes records of medications and supplies dispensed to patients, compute charges, and enters them into the computer.
  • Recognizes inappropriate dosing based on available dosage forms for various age groups to reduce the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
 
Required Certifications/Licenses:
  • A certified pharmacy technician with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy is required.
  • Sovah Health Chemo Certified (this is a Sovah Health competency)
 
Required Skills:
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

    Requires flexibility in scheduling and ability to work all shift patterns including weekends and holidays to ensure continuity of care and appropriateness of pharmacy coverage to the patients of Sovah Health Danville on all units.
