Responsible for ensuring radiological safety and compliance with the State of Pennsylvania, Department of Environmental Protection, DOT regulations, and the conditions of the facility's x-ray registration and radioactive materials licenses. Performs regular on site observation and inspection of authorized user technique and safety practices. Assists in the design implementation and oversight of radiological physics and radiation protection services. Administers a comprehensive radiation and laser safety program; maintains a comprehensive knowledge base of system radiation safety activities and a working knowledge of regulations and standards of practice applicable to the medical and research environment. Provides leadership in the development and execution of the necessary auditing programs. Develops didactic state of the art radiation safety training programs and educational seminars and delivers them at the required frequency. Responsible for development, revisions and overall management of all on-line, self-learning educational radiation safety related programs for the health system. Supervises the clinical privileging and credentialing process for physicians as it relates to laser and fluoroscopy use. Regularly reviews files for compliance. Contributes to policy and procedure development and assures existing policies and procedures are current and aligned with national standards of practice and regulations. Develops and guides implementation of program necessary to introduce new clinical and bio-research technology involving radiation sources. Researches emerging technologies and designs physics services to support the introduction of new diagnostic, therapeutic and research methodologies to the organization. Provides direct oversight for the personnel radiation monitoring system and protective apparel system. Proactively seeks out high-risk operations, assesses radiation dose, evaluates radiological hazards and consults with authorized users on risk management issues. Responds to and assists with mitigation and investigation of all radiological events and emergencies. Leads the evaluations of all radiological incidents, near misses and variances to determine the root cause, develop effective corrective action plans and oversee the implementation of those plans. Supervises Health Physics technical staff and coordinates with Medical and Health Physicists to ensure risk to employees, visitors and patients is minimized.
