Job Summary

Responsible for managing Geisinger system wide processes within Research Finance department, part of Geisinger Controllership. Responsive to the information needs of Controllership, Principal Investigators, Project Managers, Clinical Research Coordinators, Liaisons, Analysts and Finance Management. Works under the direct supervision of the Director for Research Finance.Responsible for overseeing the accounting functions for the Research Finance including maintenance of all Research general ledger and activity accounts, monthly close procedures and preparation of required financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Responsible for maintaining appropriate documentation and for adherence to related controls and policies. Supports regulatory reporting requirements including the annual Uniform Guidance audit. Provides direct supervision and assistance for research finance staff reporting to this position.

Job Duties

  • Responsible for overseeing sponsored project accounting processes including, but not limited to: time and effort reporting process; timely filing of SF269 Financial Status Reports; monthly cash drawdown requests from the Payment Management System (PMS); invoicing and accounts receivable collection.
  • Responsible for the accuracy, integrity, documentation and timely preparation of reconciliations, analysis and reporting assigned to this position and its team members.
  • Works closely with Office of Sponsored Projects, various research teams and the Controllership to support operational performance.
  • Responsive to the information needs of Research and Education Operations Management, Principal Investigators, Project Managers, Clinical Research Coordinators, Liaisons, Analysts and Finance Management.
  • Develops and updates policies and procedures to ensure consistent, accurate reporting and compliance with GAAP and other regulatory bodies to maintain an acceptable level of understanding throughout the department and enhance productivity. Works with staff to ensure efficient and effective procedures are followed and encourages staff to identify possible improvements.
  • Maintains current understanding of and ensures compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, Uniform Guidance, specific grant regulations, and related research accounting practices.
  • Ensures the accurate completion of financial information for the audits or reviews including the annual Uniform Guidance Audit including assistance preparing the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards.
  • Maintains accuracy, integrity and timely preparation of Research financial statements and grant reporting.
  • Performs any other related duties as required by the Director including attending meetings, ad hoc reporting or projects and performing system approvals in the ERP system.
  • Develops and maintains technical and/or functional aptitude with the required Workday grants module including participation in the biannual release updates.
  • Plans, manages, and oversees the accounting functions of the team members reporting to this position, ensuring consistent application of policies and procedures among staff.
  • Manages and reviews the work of the individuals reporting directly to this position. Coordinates and prioritizes work as needed. Provides direct reports with guidance, training, counseling and feedback. Encourages continuing education/training, promotes positive image, and communicates with staff to keep them informed of departmental goals, policies and procedures. Prepares and conducts performance appraisals for direct reports. Helps monitor workflow within the department.
  • Remains sensitive to issues within the department and works with staff to resolve conflicts. Ensures consistent application of policies amongst staff.
  • Ensures appropriate cross training of staff is completed and backup staff is assigned for all tasks.
  • Keeps Director informed on the status of all departmental activities and projects, meeting with the Director at least weekly.
  • Maintains the security and confidentiality of information. Maintains a good working relationship with all staff across departments and company lines to achieve department goals and objectives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Details
