Job Summary

The Sr. Director of PRAO will be responsible for the strategic development, implementation, and management of inclusive patient engagement for research access within our observational and interventional research business. This role requires a visionary leader with a strong background in the latest methods to engage, recruit and retain patients, along with the demonstrated ability to lead initiatives that create improved research access for Walgreens patients, while leading a large operational team. The successful candidate will ensure the seamless integration of strong principals of patient centricity, novel access points into research studies from across the broader Walgreens enterprise, along with driving operational excellence, project performance and value for sponsors. The Senior Director is also responsible for integrating and initiating improvements in a range of programs to achieve a seamless patient experience and to ensure the entire department is performing at or above industry standards for all critical aspects of operational and financial categories. The Senior Director of Patient Research Access is responsible for the direction and leadership of operational, financial, programmatic and personnel activities within the Patient Research Access department.

Job Responsibilities
  • Customer and Market Focus:
  • Manage the financial performance of the business unit including P&L responsibility
  • Cross functional leader representing Patient Research Access for strategic partnership discussions with sponsors
  • Develop and execute the strategic vision and operational plans for the Patient Research Access function, aligning with the overall goals and objectives of Walgreens and the RWE- CT business.
  • Play a visible role in driving industry trends, while staying abreast of emerging digital health technologies, and regulatory changes, and providing strategic recommendations to enhance the capabilities and competitive advantage of the business.
  • Oversee the identification and deployment of new engagement tools for use in patient engagement campaigns.
  • Partner with the Commercial team to drive the business development process, providing expert insights related to the target patient population, and the patient care journey, as well as budget development, and contract negotiation with sponsors.
  • Develop and present strategic portfolio recommendations, price and contract negotiations, training, system setup
  • Operational Excellence:
  • Accountable for the strategic operations of the patient research access projects, ensuring adherence to plans, timelines, and budgets (i.e., all contractual obligations related to patient recruitment funnel performance).
  • Drive operational efficiency and innovation by implementing best practices, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and quality management systems across the patient research access function; demonstrate strong commitment to continuous improvement
  • Develop, monitor, and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics related to project performance, taking proactive measures to address any issues or challenges.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to optimize project performance, enhance delivery, and streamline operational processes.
  • Leadership:
  • Ability to navigate complex, multi-functional teams and drive large-scale change within a large organization
  • Recruit, train, and manage a large, high-performing team of patient engagement professionals.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that encourages professional growth and development.
  • Provide mentorship and leadership to the patient engagement team, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and values.
  • Function as business-owner for all related technologies deployed for recruitment purposes, tracking performance of technology vendors and resolving any performance issues.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration:
  • Work closely with Sponsor teams to co-create and deliver outcomes aligned with expectations set out in FDA Diversity Action Plans.
  • Collaborate with internal Walgreens functional leaders (e.g., specialty pharmacy, marketing, and Product/IT) to ensure activation of Walgreens assets and seamless execution of tactics.
  • Establish strong relationships with key external stakeholders, including sponsors, patient advocacy organizations, CROs, and vendors to foster partnerships and drive business performance and growth.
  • Serve as a highly visible representative of the business at industry conferences, meetings, and other forums to promote our clinical research capabilities.
  • Financial Oversight:
  • Develop and manage budgets for patient engagement projects.
  • Closely monitor and deliver financial performance expectations and implement cost-saving initiatives.
  • Forecast and track resource needs for the PRA team, oversee resource allocation to ensure achievement of utilization targets and efficiency, and develop strategies to address resource gaps and optimize resource use.
  • Compliance, Legal and Privacy:
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines, and applicable industry standards in all PRA activities.
  • Work closely with Compliance, Legal and Privacy to ensure business practices are compliant with internal guidelines and policies.
  • Address and resolve any quality, privacy, legal and compliance issues promptly and effectively.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 8 years of experience in clinical research, patient recruitment or engagement team leadership with at least 10 years of direct line management in a leadership role or High School/GED and at least 11 years of experience in clinical research, patient recruitment or engagement team leadership with at least 10 years of direct line management in a leadership role.
  • Demonstrated executive presence, with the ability to effectively communicate, both internally and externally, with individuals at the Executive-level.
  • Demonstrated success in scaling patient engagement teams.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading and managing a large team of recruitment professionals, preferably within a CRO or leading patient engagement service provider.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GCP, FDA regulations, and other relevant guidelines.
  • Demonstrated business acumen and strategic mindset, with the ability to develop and execute plans that drive growth, operational excellence, and customer satisfaction.
  • Experience thinking strategically and executing operational plans effectively.
  • Demonstrated financial acumen and experience managing budgets.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including investigators, sponsors, and CROs. Previous experience serving on strategic partnership portfolio review committees.
  • Demonstrated project management skills with a proven ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and deliver high-quality results.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively with internal teams and external partners, including junior staff to senior executives.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a data-driven approach to decision-making and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality, compliance, and patient safety in all aspects of clinical operations.
  • At least 5 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
  • At least 5 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross- functional team leadership.
  • Willing to travel up to 25% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in integrating clinical trials within a pharmacy or healthcare setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive change, innovation and results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in a broad variety of clinical research study designs including observational and decentralized/hybrid clinical trials experience.
  • Deep expertise of modern clinical research and patient engagement technologies.

An employee in this position can expect a salary rate between $139,900and $384,000 plus bonus pursuant to the terms of any bonus plan if applicable. The actual salary will depend on experience, seniority, geographic location, and other factors permitted by law.
