Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for the F-35 Director 1 of Engineering & Deputy Chief Engineer. Â Â The leader selected for this role will report to the F-35 Chief Engineer. The position collaborates with division and functional leadership, cross-sector leadership, and customer engineering and program leadership teams. This leadership position is based in Redondo Beach, California and requires travel (1+ days per week) to Palmdale, California and other program sites (primarily Dallas Ft. Worth, TX), as required.
This individual selected for this role must have a collaborative leadership style, strong architecting skills and exemplary communication skills. Must have the ability to work in a high pace dynamic organization and work collaboratively to influence and gain commitment to performance from all organizations and stakeholders. The successful candidate must have both technical depth and breadth across high-rate fighter aircraft fabrication and assembly, demonstrated creative complex structure and subsystem production / field issue resolution, flight test experience, as well as mission systems engineering knowledge. This individual will provide advice and consultation to executive leadership on strategy and technical options and utilize their technical knowledge to pursue creative options that support our company and prime customer business decisions.Â
Responsibilities may include (but are not limited to):
Support the Chief Engineer by ensuring the F-35 technical team adheres to sound engineering processes and change management across the Air Vehicle Structure, Subsystems, Vehicle Systems, Mission Systems, Weapons Integration and Fleet Sustainment.
Execute, Manage, develop, and maintain roadmaps for design development, lead preparation of and approves technical and cost inputs for all new proposals and ECPs to achieve program goals.
Support Chief Engineer & Maintain cognizance and integration over technical activities within program IPT's and ensures horizontal integration of the best engineering practices across the company.
Ensure staffing needs are met while providing development, hiring, and initiatives to retain effective engineering staff.
Support F-35 Chief Engineer with earned value (cost, schedule, technical performance) of the F-35 contracts; manage SOW within program budgets, maintain appropriate performance assessment and control, establish milestones and monitor adherence to master schedule, ensure on-schedule delivery of products to contract requirements and quality standards, utilize risk management to identify program problems and develop solutions.
Lead root cause corrective action initiatives to support resolution of program issues
The position will also be responsible for supporting F-35 engineering proposals, assisting the negotiation of work content with the customer and creating performance baseline plans.
Perform functional management of Sr Mgrs. and/or Chief Engineers in the Chief Engineer Office as required.
Ability to influence and work collaboratively across an organization
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science (BS) in a related Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline and 14 years of related experience; OR Master of Science (MS) in a related STEM discipline and 12 years of related experience
Aircraft Structures & Subsystems design development experience
Aircraft Structural Analysis and/or MRB Liaison experience – Composites and/or Metallics
Experience managing engineering technical teams executing complex statement of work
Aircraft manufacturing producibility initiative management and issue resolution (Productionization)
Experience with high stakes customer presentations
Active DoD Secret or higher clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree(s) in a STEM discipline
Previous experience on the F-35 Program Air Vehicle Development Teams
Previous experience leading Air Vehicle Development for new or existing Military Aircraft Platforms
Previous experience leading Hardware and Software integration from development through test
Previous experience with Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools implementation and Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) management concepts
Previous experience executing / leading Service Life Extension or Fleet Management activities for an Aircraft program
Understanding of Design Engineering/Computer-aided Design (CAD) and engineering releases processes utilizing Product Lifecycle Management tools
Experience leading the performance of tasks on schedule, at cost and achieving all requirements as either project lead, integrated program team or cost account manager
Ability to collaborate and achieve consensus when dealing with groups from diverse organizations and backgrounds across multiple support functions
Experience as a functional manager leading people, processes, and tools for an engineering organization
Knowledge of ITAR, International Licensing Requirements and procedures
Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to focus on multiple projects with competing priorities
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
