Within the systems engineering organization the system safety team employs specialized knowledge and skills in applying scientific and engineering principles, criteria, and techniques to identify hazards, their causes, and potential mitigations to reduce or eliminate the severity or probability of these hazards. Additionally, analyses help to ensure the erroneous behavior of hardware, software, or human interaction will not inadvertently create, contribute to, or sustain a hazardous event/state/system function. Thorough analysis and implementation of requirements for sufficient hazard mitigations leads to fewer mishaps that would otherwise result in death, injury, occupational illness, damage to or loss of equipment or property, or damage to the environment. This effort seeks to achieve an acceptable level of risk for Northrop Grumman, the program, and customer, within the constraints of operational effectiveness and suitability, time, and cost, throughout all phases of the system life cycle. This position can be located in Huntsville, Alabama or Roy, Utah and may offer a competitive relocation package. The system safety team executes to a vast scope of work, interacting with a broad range of stakeholders internally and externally. The team ensures environmental safety and occupational health compliance, identifies hazards and associated causes and mitigations, inputs data into a hazard tracking system, identify safety critical items, identifies and tracks hazardous materials, ensures explosive safety and appropriate hazardous risk communication, supports government safety review boards and audits, and plays a pivotal role in test range safety as focal point between program and Vandenberg Space Force Base (VSFB) Space Launch Delta 30 (SLD 30). The selected candidate will have the opportunity to work all aspects of the system safety engineering discipline. This will include analyzing and recommending design features to meet safety criteria in system design to control or eliminate hazards, active participation in design of products/systems, support equipment and facilities. The creation of functional specifications and establishing safety requirements for assigned systems, developing documents, as required, to support customer and test/operational range requirements, performing audits of operational areas and observing procedures to report on effectiveness of the system safety program are also within scope to this role. This individual will also be instrumental in guiding the system safety team through writing requirements for incorporation into DOORS, working in and maneuvering in CAMEO, and verification and validation efforts. Additionally, the Sr. Principal Engineer is expected to coach and mentor fellow team members to successful program execution, while working toward long-range goals and objectives under consultative direction. Serving as an organization spokesperson on the project for the System Safety team, the Sr. Principal Engineer will act as an advisor to management and customers/stakeholders on advanced technical research studies, applications, and work products. The selected candidate should demonstrate a proactive approach to problem solving by identifying issues effecting the team and program then voluntarily working to resolve through innovative solutions and applying advanced technical principles, theories and concepts. The Sr. Principal Engineer will help drive execution to the program schedule within cost and time constraints as a technical lead for the team.
