Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Launch and Missile Defense Systems has an exciting career opportunity for an Software Engineer – Algorithm SW Engineer (RA) to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Huntsville, AL.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program integrates the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that enables the U.S. president, secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, to see the battle develop collectively, and to dynamically manage designated networked sensors and weapons systems to achieve global and regional mission objectives.

C2BMC supports a layered missile defense capability that enables an optimized response to threats of all ranges in all phases of flight. C2BMC is the force multiplier that globally and regionally networks integrate, synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations to optimize performance. C2BMC is integral to all system ground and flight tests, which verify and exercise all current and future missile defense system capabilities.

As a member of the Regional Applications Agile Release Train (ART) of the Missile Defense National Team for Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) (aka C2BMC NT), this position will be a contributor to the design and development of Java-based mathematical algorithms in support of the C2BMC. The candidate will help generate software design artifacts, implement Java-based software changes, support design and code reviews, support software testing, and resolve issues arising from software testing. The candidate will be involved in the presentation of developed designs. The candidate will actively participate in agile planning and execution using established C2BMC processes.

Essential Functions:

  • Knowledge of working within the BMDS domain and Java application development are preferred, particularly for military applications.
  • Experience with software integration testing and supporting the resolution of system behavior issues, identifying root causes, and recommending solutions are also positives.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, ability to work with a team and independently, and the poise and flexibility required to work in a dynamic environment.
  • Must be able to work in a multiple-discipline environment that includes systems engineering, integration and test, deployment, and warfighter support.
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office products.
  • Infrequent travel between Huntsville and Colorado development facilities may be required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline preferred from an accredited university and 2 years of related experience or a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 0 years of experience, or 6 years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up-to 10% to support business needs.
  • Applicants must have a current active in-scope DoD issued secret security clearance at the time of application which is required to start.
  • Agile development knowledge and experience in all aspects of the full life-cycle development of complete mathematical algorithms such as:
    • Tracking
    • Correlation
    • Guidance
    • Battle management
    • Radar management) for Java-based military applications
  • Knowledge and some experience in developing software within an agile development process and the incremental decomposition of work.
  • Knowledge and some experience developing software in a structured, process-based, integrated team environment.
  • Knowledge and some experience developing software within a DEVSECOPS framework for Java-based applications in a Unix/Linux platform environment.
  • Knowledge and experience with:
    • Git/GitLab
    • Eclipse
    • Maven/Gradle
    • SonarQube or similar toolsets
  • Knowledge and some experience with developing automated unit tests and verifying requirements.
  • Experience with system engineering artifacts such as:
    • ICDs
    • Use cases
    • Sequence diagrams
    • Review participation
  • Support the preparation of software design artifacts for presentations and reviews.
  • Knowledge of implementation of MATLAB-based algorithms before their adoption into tactical Java-based software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • DoD 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (Security+, GSEC, SCNP, SSCP, CISSP, CISA, GSE, SCNA) at the start date is highly desirable.

Salary Range: $83,300 - $124,900
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
