Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Launch and Missile Defense Systems has an exciting career opportunity for a Sr. Principal Software Engineer – SW Engineer (RA) to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Huntsville, AL.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program integrates the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that enables the U.S. president, secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, to see the battle develop collectively, and to dynamically manage designated networked sensors and weapons systems to achieve global and regional mission objectives.

C2BMC supports a layered missile defense capability that enables an optimized response to threats of all ranges in all phases of flight. C2BMC is the force multiplier that globally and regionally networks integrate, synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations to optimize performance. C2BMC is integral to all system ground and flight tests, which verify and exercise all current and future missile defense system capabilities.

This position is for a Sr. Principal Software Engineer on the C2BMC program. The selected candidate will be responsible for software development in Java for one of the Regional Applications teams in Huntsville (Battle Management, System-Arch, or Track Server). Under minimal direction, provides specialized expertise within multiple systems and software disciplines and general knowledge of related disciplines, applications implications, and customer areas.

Essential Functions:

  • Performing in-depth analysis and technical support of systems software products, including complex problem resolution, design, development, testing, operational integration, and user support.
  • Maintains currency, debugs, and configures related software products.
  • Works from specifications to develop or modify operating systems applications.
  • Assists with design, coding, benchmark testing, debugging, and documentation of programs.
  • Interfaces with other system support groups to resolve problems, set standards, and improve the overall efficiency of the operating system.
  • Designs, codes, tests, and implements tools for operations automation.
  • Works on most phases of software systems programming applications and may require minor instruction and guidance in other phases.
  • Leadership positions on small software-focused teams may be required.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and work effectively in a fast-paced team environment.

    • Mentoring and guiding junior engineers.
    • Knowledge of server-side/database development and computer system administration.
  • Strong problem-solving skills include reviewing performance and operational issues, identifying root causes, and recommending, designing, and implementing solutions.
  • Command and control system application development.
  • Experience with Software Integration and formal testing.
  • Ability to present advanced concepts to non-software engineers, including senior program and military leaders.
  • Proven ability/experience to mentor and teach junior engineers.
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on unanticipated tasks.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, the ability to work independently, and the poise and flexibility required to work in a highly dynamic environment.
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office products.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline preferred from an accredited university and 8 years of related experience, or a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 6 years of experience, or a PhD and 4 years of experience, or 12 years of related experience in lieu of a degree may be considered.
  • Applicants must have a current active in-scope DoD issued secret security clearance at the time of application which is required to start.
  • DoD 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (Security+, GSEC, SCNP, SSCP, CISSP, CISA, GSE, SCNA) is required at the start or must be obtained within 60 days of the start date.
  • Software engineering and software development with strong Java/J2EE experience.
  • Experience and knowledge of software practices such as:
    • Coding standards
    • Automated testing
    • Automated build pipelines
    • Configuration management
    • Experience developing enterprise applications on Linux and Windows.
    • Extensive experience with Java foundation classes and toolkits.
    • Net-centric, horizontal integration program expertise.
  • Use of common software development and management tools such as:
    • Maven
    • Git/GitHub
    • Nexus
    • Eclipse
  • Experience with agile development methodologies.
  • Understand standard system engineering design artifacts such as Use Cases and SysML diagrams.
  • Knowledge and experience implementing Cyber Security/RMF requirements.
  • Experience with performance modeling.
  • Experience with microservices.
  • Experience with DevSecOps and/or build management.
  • Designing and building Graphical User Interfaces.

Salary Range: $127,000 - $190,600
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
