This job is responsible for the clerical functions which support the department. Performs routine operational procedures following detailed instructions, generates and monitors printing of patient reports. Answers departmental calls from patients, providers and other labs directing them appropriately. Services phone calls from external reference lab clients and act as the customer service liaison for the laboratories. Enters outside orders into Epic to ensure proper billing and facilitates sending lab results as needed.

Education

Required - High School diploma or equivalent

Work Experience

Required - 1 year experience in a medical office, office, or customer service setting

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Basic skills such as reading, writing, spelling, and math to complete daily paper work, write or fill out reports.
  • Working knowledge to efficiently use copy machine, calculator, computer and printer operations.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates versatility and cooperation.
  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard. 

Job Duties

  • Provides client services support through assisting internal and external doctors, nurses, labs, etc. to facilitate the delivery of patient laboratory results using EPIC and the Laboratory computer system, SOFT.
  • Communicates issues regarding delays of tests results within the Laboratory to the House Coordinator and Emergency Department.
  • Facilitates communication between labs and different departments within all Hospitals.
  • Enters outside Home Health agency orders into Epic to ensure proper billing.
  • Acts as the call center for the lab ensuring the proper transfer of calls as to not impede laboratory staff from their core duties.
  • Receives laboratory supply orders for clinics, hospitals and external clients, and fills and distributes via lab courier.
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
  • Other related duties as required.

Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid or tissue, but exposure or potential for exposure may occur.

The incumbent works with patients who have known or suspected communicable diseases and may enter isolation rooms.  The incumbent has an occupational risk for exposure to all communicable diseases.

Because the incumbent works within a healthcare setting, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and/or disposal of contaminated waste. The risk level of exposure may increase depending on the essential job duties of the role.
