This Pharmacist position is key within the Specialty pharmacy.  This position will support pharmaceutical care activities including interacting with patients and/or caregivers.   This position will work closely with the clinical team leadership to ensure overall performance of any program service, ensuring the team meets and / or exceeds program Service Level Agreements (SLA). This position will work collaboratively with other departments to ensure patient care and ensure business rules are adhered to.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties and responsibilities generally reflect the expectations of this position but are not intended to be all inclusive:

  • Performs the duties of a pharmacist working in a specialty pharmacy in compliance with policy and state/federal regulations and provides telephonic, consultative pharmacy services to specialty patients.
  • Acts as supervising pharmacist when the pharmacy supervisor/manager/PIC is not present in the pharmacy and works collaboratively with all other pharmacy departments.
  • Prepares and dispenses specialty pharmaceutical product prescriptions/orders. Evaluates specific products requirements and references clinical resources to evaluate prescription orders for accuracy.
  • Checks all orders for completeness of information. Verifies patient information and proper authorizations and/or certifications. Checks product accuracy before shipping.
  • Processes and fills orders in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Ensures product is maintained and prepared within SOPs and department guidelines/processes, or manufacturer requirements.
  • Checks all prescriptions for adherence to regulatory guidelines. Calculates correct dosages based on specific directions.
  • Organizes and directs technicians’ workflow; verifying their preparation and labeling of pharmaceuticals; verifying order entries, doses, and cycles.
  • Provides professional product information and assistance to clinical staff(s), patients and pharmacy staff.
  • Participates in Clinical/Staff teaching and in-service programs. 
  • Verifies all inventory and expiration dates of products that are being dispensed. Verifies accurate temperature requirements.
  • Apply appropriate beyond use date for reconstituted medication.
  • Maintains education information from Multiple Resources, remains abreast of new information.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information related to patients, medical staff, disease states, diagnosis, product usage, etc.
  • Prepares reports and monitoring activities as directed.
  • Ability to complete day end assignments – performing building security checks and protocols prior to closing, and if needed, signs daily workflow log.
  • Ability to review drug-drug interactions and manage patient medication regimen accordingly.
  • Delegates aspects of the practice of pharmacy to a pharmacy intern or pharmacy technician within the parameters of their job description.
  • Works with supervisory staff to continually develop and implement ideas for delivering high-quality, cost-effective services.
  • Participates in the pharmacy on call rotation as applicable.
  • Works independently; demonstrates leadership in the practice of pharmacy; serves as a backup to the supervising pharmacist.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Skilled in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures; developing and implementing new strategies and procedures (performance improvement) including best practices.
  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures

Working Conditions:

Environment –

  • Hybrid - Professional office environment and Work from Home settings

Physical Requirements –

Must be able to stand, walk, sit, and reach outward on a frequent basis. Push/pull up to 15lbs and lift/carry up to 15lbs.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Education/Training –

  • B.S. Pharm or PharmD required; must be a registered pharmacist in good standing with appropriate State Boards of Pharmacy
  • Graduate of an accredited school of pharmacy
  • Current and unrestricted license(s) in good standing
  • Licensed in the state of Kentucky to practice pharmacy.
  • Meets or exceeds current C.E. requirements pursuant to Board of Pharmacy laws.
  • Ability to apply for additional state licensure as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Business Experience –

  • 3+ years of post-graduate experience in pharmacy operations, clinical oversight, and patient care.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of computers and software applications & excellent word processing skills.

Specialized Knowledge & Skills –

Specialty experience, mail order experience, bi-lingual and multiple state licensure.
